MGN ON THE ROAD
Acme-Grand Traverse Resort & Spa
The 2nd Annual Native American Cup continued its impressive growth as
108 Native Americans from all over the country participated. While the
numbers are up, always an important factor for event promoters like
originator Henry Boulley Jr., the overall quality also went up. These
folks can play golf and the matches grew increasingly more competitive.
The Cup is under a modified Ryder Cup format, which utilized best ball,
alternate shots, scramble and match play. This is a tremendous draw
for players that have not had the opportunity to compete in such a
variety of games within the game.
Bellaire-Shanty Creek Resort
There have been new owner sightings at Shanty Creek Resort. The new
owners, located in Missouri, are keeping on the current management team.
Their initial impact and outlay of dollars will go to the ski areas,
with purchases of "Magic Carpet" skier mover systems on learning areas
and additional snow making equipment for the Shanty Creek and Schuss
Mountain sites.
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
As you read this missive, we will be in Edmonton Alberta, to check out
some of the golf and also televise the ING Edmonton Marathon for our
sister channel, Running Canada Television http://runningcanada.tv
While there, we hope to rekindle our love affair with the Stanley
Thompson/Robert Trent Jones course at Banff and the RTJ course in Kananaskis
Country as well as some newer courses around Calgary and Edmonton.
This week, Jack Nicklaus, John Daly, Sergio Garcia, Greg Norman and
Stephan Ames are battling it out in the Telus Skins Game in Banff
Daly wound up winning the event after he caught fire on the back nine
of the Telus Skins Game and won the event with a six foot birdie putt
on the 17th hole Tuesday.
"It finally feels good. I didn't hit it all that bad yesterday, I just
didn't make any putts," added Daly, 40, at the Fairmont Banff Springs
Golf Course, 130 kilometres west of Calgary. It was his first victory in
seven appearances at the skins game.
"I was fortunate to finally make a couple of putts today. It started
rolling a little better on this side."
He's not sure if his play at the skins will translate into more success
on the PGA circuit.
"It's tough. You have a couple of good holes and win the whole thing
like I did," he said. "I don't think I played better than anybody, I
think Stephen played better than all of us."
Daly ended up capturing nine skins and $210,000 Tuesday after being
shut out on Monday.
Prior to Daly's success, Calgary's Stephen Ames had been the leader.
Ames collected six skins and $95,000 on the opening day of the annual
event that included Ames, Daly, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Sergio
Garcia.
The 42-year-old Ames played in his first skins game in Whistler, B.C.,
last year, capturing seven skins and $150,000 over 18 holes to become
the first Canadian to win the event since Mike Weir, of Bright's Grove,
Ont., in 1999.
Daly paid homage to Nicklaus and his impact on the game.
"I've only got to play with him a couple of times. I never got a chance
to play him at any majors or anything," said Daly.
"Just getting to be around him is a thrill. He's such a great man. He
set the stage pretty much for all of us."
The total prize money for the event was $360,000. Sergio Garcia
finished third at the event with three skins for $55,000. Nicklaus and Norman
were shut out.
Some material and all quotes were taken from the Canadian Press.

The Ryder Cup in the 1940's -- The War Years
The Cup returned after WWII in 1947, where the U.S. defeated Britain's
11-1. Robert Hudson, a fruit grower and canner, stepped up with money
and the use of the Portland Golf Club in Oregon. Hudson met the team as
they stepped off the Queen Mary and joined them on their 4 day travel
across the country. The U.S. Team featured Byron Nelson and Sam Snead
and The British Team returned Dai Rees, Henry Cotton and King. In
1949, the match got tighter as the U.S. beat Britain by a 7-5 score. Ben
Hogan captained for the U.S. with Charles Whitcombe taking the helm for
the British Team. Hogan, was a non playing captain that was still
recovering from his accident. Hogan caused a stir when he complained about
the grooves on the clubs of some of the British players. This was, no
doubt, his retaliation for an incident in 1947 when Britain's Henry
Cotton asked for an inspection of Hogan's clubs.

PUBLIC COURSE TEAM REPEATS AT FOUNDERS CHALLENGE
A back-nine rally led the Public Course team to victory in the 2006
Founders Challenge Sunday at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada. The public
team, captained by Michigan State University women's golf coach Stacy
Slobodnik-Stoll, defeated their Private Club counterparts 12-6 in the
two-day golf competition, winning eight of the final nine singles matches
in the process.
After the two teams of women amateur golfers split the points in six
four-ball matches at The Meadows Golf Club in Allendale Saturday, the
private team jumped in front on Sunday with wins by college
playersLindsay Dunigan of Western Michigan University and Raquel Hansen of 2006
Division II runner-up Ferris State. Then veteran Sue Campbell of Campbell
of Kalamazoo snatched a 1-up victory over Barb Schmid to start the
comeback for the winners. After Campbell's final-hole win, private club
captain Joan Garety routed Julie Massa, 7 & 6. But following
that defeat, the public team closed out the competition with six straight
triumphs, including 2 & 1 wins by incoming Michigan State freshman Laura Kueny
over Laura Bavaird and Slobodnik-Stoll over 2006 Michigan Amateur
champion Lindsay Davis of the University of Michigan.
"We're delighted again this year with the field of players we attracted
to our event," said Laurie Beard, president and chief executive officer
of Founders Bank & Trust. "These girls and women seem to get better
with each passing year and we're looking forward to another great event
in 2007."
Though the margin of victory was wider than expected, Slobodnik-Stoll
saluted the opposition. "When I heard our team was behind at the turn
in the first four matches, I wondered whether this would be their year,"
she said. "But our players in the middle of line-up really got going
on the back nine and carried us to the win."
Ashley Smith, Stephany Fleet, Jenny Calkins and Stephanie Mory all
scored wins for the public team, which also got an impressive 5 & 4
victory by high school junior Shannon Warner of Livonia over Caledonia's
Carolyn Schaner.
Founders Bank and Trust of Grand Rapids is the presenting sponsor of
the Founders Challenge. Clothing for event participants, volunteers and
officials is provided by the golf industry's top apparel
manufacturer,Fairway & Greene of Barneveld, Wisconsin. Additional sponsors of the
event are Alticor, the international direct sales company based in Ada,
