DAL COROBBO WINS MICHIGAN PGA
by Mike Shiels
BELLAIRE, MI -- John DalCorobbo, director of golf at Michigan State
University's Forest Akers Golf Club, won the $80,000 Michigan PGA
Championship by shooting 65 in Wednesday's final round Wednesday on Shanty
Creek Resort's Cedar River course. Over three rounds, DalCorobbo shot
72-68-65 205 (-11); enough for a four-stroke victory over Jordan Young, an
assistant professional from Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club.
DalCorobbo received $9,500 and an exemption into the 2006 Buick Open. His name
will also be inscribed on the Gilbert A. Currie Trophy.
"What a wonderful feeling to match the names on that trophy to be a
part of that legacy is a tremendous feeling. When I was younger and
playing full time I didn't have that reverence, but as I get older I get a
rush from that. So many great players have won this tournament, and now
I’m the 84th winner," said DalCorobbo, who is 40. "I woke up this
morning and thought this might be my day. My warm-up was good and then I hit
the longest drive I've ever hit on the first hole. I guess I was on the
good side of divine intervention today."
DalCorobbo's most significant victory to date had been the 1998
Tournament of Champions. He lost the Michigan PGA Championship in a three-way
playoff in 2002.
"I've been in the situation before and I think I pressed too hard and
tried to do too much. This time I thought, I'm not going to worry about
it. If it's my time so be it. I think I have better acceptance in my
life now and I'm able to put things in perspective and that helped." His
opponents had to accept a perfect round from DalCorobbo the Michigan
PGA's "Teacher of the Year" hit 14 fairways and 18 greens-in-regulation,
far exceeding the "12-14 goal" he preaches to his high-level students.
"There were times when I thought I’d never win again. Times I thought I
should place my focus elsewhere. And then on days like this, I think,
"Wow, I still have game!"
Young, a 34-year-old Canadian, began the final round two strokes ahead
of DalCorobbo, tied with Crystal Mountain Resort's Brad Dean, a shot
off of the lead. Though Young grabbed the lead during the final round, he
wasn't able to hold it. "This was my first time in the Michigan PGA. I
was nervous and I couldn't pull the trigger. My knees were knocking and
I forgot how to relax and roll the ball," Young admitted. "I missed
two-foot putts on the sixth and eighth hole that didn't even touch the
hole, so I lost my confidence. Then I made a bad swing on the 17th hole
that ended my chances."
Dean's chances suffered a blow when he hit his drive out of bounds on
the seventh hole. "It didn't take the wind out of my sails though,
because I came back and made two birdies," said Dean, 39, who closed with a
72 and finished in third-place, five-strokes behind. >="Ultimately the
putts just didn't fall."
Defending champion Joe Pollack, from Quail Ridge Country Club in Ada,
began the final round with a one-stroke lead but closed with a 75 to
finish T-5, seven strokes behind.
The three-round, $80,000 Michigan PGA Championship was contested on
Shanty Creek's Cedar River Golf Club and The Legend. The field was cut to
the top 70 and ties, and Wednesday!=s final round was played on the
Cedar River course. The championship was first held in 1922.

ALEX ROCHA LEADS AFTER FIRST ROUND OF BAY MILLS OPEN
By Marth Henwood
BRIMLEY, Mich.--Brazilian Alex Rocha lit it up on the inbound nine
Thursday to set the early tone at the Canadian Tour's Bay Mills Open
Players Championship.
The 27-year-old Brazilian posted a 6-under 66 at Wild Bluff Golf Club
to take the overnight lead, one stroke in front of Toronto's Cory
Jones, Anders Hultman of Sweden and Californian Scott Gibson. Three-time
Canadian Tour champion Mike Grob and Scott McNeil of Calgary are in the
clubhouse at minus-4.
This week marks the final chance for players to make a run for one of
the top two spots on the Tour money list and an exemption into the
second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School later this fall. Americans
Jaime Gomez and Peter Tomasulo, who sit one-two in earnings as play began
in Michigan, each opened with a 73 Thursday. Playing on the afternoon
side of the draw, Rocha made the turn at even par before catching fire
on the back side with a 6-under 30. The Brazilian birdied seven of
nine holes on the back and had his run for eight in a row halted with a
bogey on the par-4 14th, a hole Rocha admitted has caused him fits
since the Tour first travelled to Michigan in 2002. "I haven't hit a good
shot off that tee in four years here," laughed Rocha, referring to
number 14. "I can't put a finger on what it is about that hole. I haven't
been able to get comfortable there at all. I'll try to work on that
tomorrow." It has been an up-and-down season for the two-time
Brazilian amateur champion. While making eight of ten cuts with a pair of top
ten showings, Rocha hasn't been able to get into a groove. That is,
until Thursday. Rocha had the flat stick working and drained three
birdie putts over 35 feet. "That was awesome out there today, but it's
the first round," he said. "Right now, I'm not thinking about anything
else. What's important to me is what happens at 7:40 tomorrow morning
off the tenth tee. If I'm around Sunday afternoon, I'll worry about
that then."
Scores Thursday after the opening round of the Canadian Tour's
$200,000 Bay Mills Open Players Championship being held at the
7101-yard, par-72 Wild Bluff GC (A-denotes amateur):

Bellaire-Cedar Run, The Legend, Schuss Mountain and The Summit
Shanty Creek's foursome of golf course will give you all you can
handle. It has the history of William Diddle, who designed The Summit course.
Diddle, was one of the original signatories to the American Association
of Golf Architects. The course was brought on in 1965. Diddle also did
The Classic and Otsego Club. Warner Bowen, one of Michigan less known,
but highly regarded architects who brought on the Schuss Mountain
course, Arnold Palmer, who brought in The Legend in 1985 and finally Tom
Weiskopf, who filled out the field with Cedar River in 1999.

Gaylord-Otsego Club, Michaywe and The Pines
We caught Mark Hogan helping out the Gaylord High School golf team, a
job that is not a job for him. "I really enjoy working with these kids,"
said Hogan. Gaylord, an up north golf powerhouse, certainly has some
great courses to train on.
Judy Mason, Director of Golf at the Michaywe complex, indicated that
they were holding their own this year, in a most difficult time for golf
courses. They have continued to make improvements at the course. Last
year, Don Childs completed his reworking of the Pines course and this
year they have roofed in their patio area. Judy also just finished up
her 7th year with Treetops as the Women Only golf schools. This year,
Judy had 10 schools at Treetops.
This Monday, Judy and Michaywe will host the 9th GAM Women's Senior
Amateur Championship.

Mt. Pleasant-Buck's Run
Buck's Run has one of the most idyllic settings of a golf course in
Michigan. Buck's Run is situated in front of a large lake that has a
variety of peninsula greens build into this former quarry. In addition,
they have an 18-hole putting course that is one of the best in the state.
The clubhouse itself is spectacular. This is a Jerry Matthews course
and certainly one of his best efforts.
