The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION-TREETOPS PAR 3 SHOOTOUT AND "LITTLE" BREAK
=======================================================================
Threetops at Treetops has become a famous golf course in America.  Just as people travel to Pebble Beach, Kohler and Pinehurst, they are now traveling to Gaylord, Michigan to play this delighful Rick Smith creation.   Kevin McKinley, Treetops Director of Golf, shows us around with the Treetops Amateur Par-3 Shootout, their clinicclinic, a shot at the "Little Break"  and players shooting for a $10,000 hole in one. Jennie McCafferty is our host.

========================
The 33rd Annual Kircher Cup television show is now online athttp://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/kircher_cup/ Right now, we just have the WMV up. Look for the Steve Kircher's victory lap when his partner  Grant Bruce eagled the final hole.

MGN ON THE ROAD

Alanson
Eagle Beach
We stopped by Eagle Beach twice on our travels this weekend, to visit with Bob Shorter and his nine hole Eagle Beach GC.  We missed Shorter, but saw that he was getting some play on this Larry Mancour layout.

Boyne Falls
Grand Mountain was sparkling on a beautiful summer day.  The resort was getting back in order after a Boyne Mountain Blue Grass Festival the evening before.  We chatted with Casey Powers, Head Golf Professional and Colin Stackos, Assistant Professional about the concert.  They are the ones responsible for putting on the annual Tournament of Champions. They felt the turnout was a little disappointing, but that the music was great.

Boyne started summer music with Kid Rock for the first two years and this year fleshed out a series, with the Gin Blossoms, The Allman Brothers Band, the Blue Grass Festival and upcoming comedy specials  with Ted Alexandro and Alonzo Bodden.

The concert series might take a few years to build, but if it comes anywhere near was Aspen has done, it will be fantastic. We attended the Aspen Summer Music Festival for years and saw it grow into a monster event.

Detroit-Belle Isle
We had the opportunity to drop by the First Tee of Michigan Golf Center on Belle Isle.  David Coy has been the manager since day one, almost nine years ago.  This is the training course that Rick Smith designed and Tim Finchem, Ken Devine, Freeman Hendrix and former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer kicked off in the late 90's.

David Coy indicated that the recent times have been challenging.  The City of Detroit's financial problems have led to them selling two of their courses, Rackham and Rogell as well as cutting back on support for Palmer, Chandler, Rouge and the nine hole Belle Isle course and the First Tee of Michigan Golf Center.

Coy hopes that the new attention being put on Belle Isle by the Grand Prix will bring positive focus to their program as well. He feels that bringing the nine hole course and the training center together, could make it more of a destination for golfers.  However, their immediate goal is to make it to next year.  They desperately need some help.

Harbor Springs
Country Club of Boyne
The 33rd Kircher Cup was held this past weekend on the Ross and Hill courses under perfect skies. Legendary golfer and family friend , Glen Johnson, was the tournament host.  Boyne personnel that were working the tournament included, host golf pro of the Arthur Hills course, Dave Trudell,  Joshua Richter who is the professional at the Heather course, Mark Novak and  Daniel Turcott who had major responsibilities with the Kircher Cup.

We had the opportunity to talk with Bernie Friedrich, the mastermind of the massive television advertising buy that Boyne unleashed this year to its down state market.  It is hard to watch any segment of ESPN without encountering a Boyne commercial.  Bernie Friedrich, indicated that they are also running a full schedule of ads on the food network as well.

The advertising campaign has driven traffic to the resorts in such numbers, that Friedrich says they will use the same strategy for skiing this fall and winter. You can see all of the commercials at http://www.boyne.com/Gallery/Videos/

We video taped the tournament and will put it online later. Viewers will be able to see Steve Kircher's victory lap on the 18th green, after playing partner Grant Bruce drained a 40 foot birdie putt  to vault them into third place..

Marsh Ridge
The folks at Marsh Ridge Golf Course are feeling the pain of another year that their number of tee times has decreased.  Jack Bott,  who turned over the course to his grandson, visited the course last week.  Bott, who lost his wife of many years, last December, also has a 1200 acre compound in the Gaylord area.  Bott, who has another home in Gross Pointe, spends most of the year at his Key Largo home.
http://marshridge.com

Michaywe Pines
Judy Mason continues her strong leadership at Michaywe.  Rounds, this year, are up and should stay that way with a good fall.  This was the only property in the Gaylord area that was in the plus category.  Most of the properties I visited, were about the same or a little under last year.

As I mentioned last week, the course is in awesome shape and the resort is seemingly on the right track after some tough years, a few years back.
http://michaywe.com

Mountain Lake
The former Lakes course, is continuing to rally back from having been closed for a year.  This has been a tough go for pro/owner Dan Webster.  They have little in an advertising budget, trying mainly to build rounds with the locals. The course, a Jerry Matthews design has held up well during its hiatus and should provide golfers with a quality experience.
http://mountainlake.com

Otsego Club
Renovation and renewal continues at the Otsego Club.  Guests and members will notice a new and improved walkway structure. New concrete in areas and repair in others allows for a smooth evening walk around the resort. New indoor and outdoor furniture guarantee  comfortable seating and new entrances allow for visitors to have a nice pour from "Liquid Louie", famed barkeep at the Logmark.  The rooms are also in the process of being upgraded, we stayed one night in one that has not had the redo as yet and our last night in one that had.  Big difference.  The remodeled rooms have beds you can get lost in, new bathroom tub and sink and  wiring that works everywhere.

The big news, is the new building that is rising within the family of Otsego buildings, a new lodging and meeting center. The new facility is right next to the Blue Spruce and will feature a number of meeting rooms and some executive suites.
http://otsegoclub.com

The Natural and Marsh Ridge
Ed Ford, manager of The Natural, thinks that a good fall could put them up over last year in rounds played.  The course, like many in the Gaylord area, was looking terrific due to good maintenance and late summer rains.  Marsh Ridge, the lodging facility for The Natural, has continued to improve under the renovation of owner, Larry Bowden. Many of the buildings in the Marsh Ridge complex have been converted into and sold as condos.

Treetops
Kevin McKinley, Director of Golf, and his crew sure  keep things light at Treetops.  This past weekend, they held their annual  Par-3 Amateur Shootout at the Signature and Threetops and added a couple of wrinkles.  First of all, golfers had the opportunity for a $10,000 hole in one at the same spot Trevino hit his in 2001 to win a million dollars.  Secondly, they sprinkled in putting, pitching and punching shots in an  event called the "Little Break".  The tournament field was up almost 40% this year.  While it should not seem surprising, the fact is, that golfers from around the U.S. want to take on the most famous par-3 in the country. We have seen people from Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Wisconsin and Tennessee in our latest coverage of a Par-3 event.

Wilderness Valley
Wilderness Valley is the home of two courses, the Valley course, designed by one of Michigan's greatest professionals, Al Watrous and the second, Black Forest, Tom Doak's second course.

Black Forest, built on a modest budget under the helm of owner Dave Smith, is getting some attention from new owners, Osprey Recreation.  Osprey is in the process of upgrading the bunkers and making other cosmetic changes.  A number of players on the course had heard that Tom Doak had visited the course.  One golfer had actually hit some balls  with Doak when the course was being built. He said her got a call from his buddy, that there was  a chance to golf the new course. He said, he remembered the day, but had no idea that Doak had gone on from there to be one of the world's greatest golf designers.

The Valley course, according to many of the golfers I chatted with,  was in the best shape that it has been in for some time, Corey Crowley is the Manager and Head Golf Professional.

Mackinaw Island
Fred George, PGA Professional at Wawashkamo, says his membership is way up, but that the rounds have been down this year.  The course looked all of its 100 plus years, as a drought has left it a little scratchy in spots.
http://wawashkamo.com

Mackinaw City
The Mackinaw Club is under new ownership, the former owners, Jim and Mary Carter, lost the property to the bank. The course was not open last year.  The Carter's had worked with designer in building golf courses in the late 80's and 90's, and decided to build their own.  They asked Matthews if he would help with the course, after they had done most of the routing.  Matthews helped out his friends, but was a little reluctant to out his name on it, for the minimal role he had.

When it first opened, it seemed like a natural for the area and that it would succeed.  However, that was not the case.  Hopefully, the new owner will have the vision and the resources to make it happen.

MICHIGAN PLAYERS AT USGA EVENTS
…by Terry Moore
=================================
Hats off to the Michigan players who played well this past week in two USGA national tournaments. At the USGA Senior Amateur held at Flint Hills National GC in Andover, Kan, Billy Zylstra, Greg Reynolds and Bill McDonald all advanced to match play following 36-hole medal play last weekend. Zylstra, the low local qualifier from Westland, fired a 65 in his first round and led the field. He followed up with a 73 to finish second to medalist Steve Bogan (137). Zylstra won his first two matches but fell 3 & 1 to acclaimed amateur Vinny Giles. Reynolds, the 2002 USGA Senior champion, also won two matches while McDonald won his first match.

At the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur at Sunriver Resort, Oregon, Ada’s Joan Garety made it to match play (157) and won her first match. Farmington Hills’ Maria Malone did not qualify for match play following the 36-hole medal play.

"IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN"...TRUE, BUT MICHIGAN GOLF COURSES ARE TRYING
======================================================
Michigan golfers have an opportunity that no other state can match. In addition to magnificent courses with terrific playing conditions and spectacular views, Michigan has hundreds of golf courses that excel in environmental management and recognize that being in compliance with environmental laws is critical to the future of the game. These courses are serious about protecting and enhancing natural resources and actively demonstrate this by voluntarily participating in the Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program (MTESP).

Golfers who are passionate about the environment or simply interested in supporting stewardship efforts can easily find one of these "green" golf courses by going to the Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program site and clicking on "members". The site lists all the courses involved in the program and further identifies those who have achieved certification status.
Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program certified courses are known for going the extra mile to be proactive and it's not uncommon to find additional habitat in the form of vegetative buffers along waterways and no mow areas on the property.

These tall grass areas are often designed to attract birds, butterflies, small mammals and reptiles which add another dimension to any golfing experience.

So, the next time you're thinking about getting in a round of golf, or booking an outing or conference, consider a MTESP certified course. You will know that you're supporting a business that is doing the right thing for the environment and your community.

17TH ANNUAL FIGHT AGAINST CANCER FUNDRAISER
===============================================
There are  still  a few openings left in the 17th Annual Fight Against Cancer Fundraiser. The Event is September 10th, 2007. Like other things in golf,  charitable golf outings have been struggling as well. Darin Philport, event chairman would love to hear from anyone out there that is looking for a great golf experience for a worthy cause.

We did a show on the tournament in 2002.  At that time, Darin Philport discussed the tournament and W. Bruce Matthews, course architect, chatted about some of the holes at Hidden River Golf and Casting Club, and the descisions that went into making them.  Jennie McCafferty is our host.

KENDALL AND TONTAPANISH TOP 50 INSTRUCTORS BY GOLF RANGE MAGAZINE
=====================================================================
 Dave Kendall and Tom Tontapanish, of Miles of Golf, were named to as “Top 50 Golf Instructors in America” in a poll of teaching professionals selected by Golf Range Magazine.  Though Kendall and Tontapanish are no strangers to awards for golf instruction, the designation from Golf Range Magazine represents something different.  “Our teaching group is selected much differently,” said Steve di Costanzo, president of Golf Range Magazine.  “We focus on instructors who work either year-round or seasonally at golf ranges, learning centers, golf domes or academies at golf complexes with a short course.”

The award caps a banner 2007 season for Kendall, who is the current Michigan Senior PGA and Michigan Senior Open champion.  “This is a highly-regarded honor coming from a noted industry publication,” said Kendall.  “I’m also delighted that the recognition is being given as well to Tom, who represents everything good about our staff of PGA and LPGA professionals here.”  http:/www.milesofgolf.com.

Adare Golf Club with Cathal O'Sulivan
Ireland's Adare Manor was the site for Robert Trent Jones final major golf course design. It is now the home of the Irish Open and was recently extended to its 7453 yards.  The Maigue River and a  14 acre lake provide the usual water hazards that Robert Trent Jones so loved to create.

Lahinch Golf Club with Jennie McCafferty and Bob McCavery
Lahinch Golf Links almost has it all.  They have the history, built in 1892, designer blood lines in Old Tom Morris and Alister MacKenzie, a storied hole in No. 5 and a location on the Atlantic Ocean. What they don't have, according to professional Bob McCavery, is the infrastructure to support a major tournament.  It is not near a major city, they have narrow roads and there are  few hotels. Our video gives you a nice look at the town, course and a recounting of the history by Bob McCavery, who has been the pro since 1959 after he took over from his dad, who was there for a couple of decades himself. SWEETGRASS GOLF CLUB TO OPEN SUMMER 2008
============================================
The Island Resort & Casino recently announced the construction phase of Sweetgrass Golf Club is nearing completion. The 18-hole championship course will be the newest amenity at the Vegas-style gaming destination in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Grow-in has commenced on virtually all the holes, while a couple holes are already grown-in. Sweetgrass is projected to open for play in July 2008.

The name Sweetgrass refers to an aromatic herb, a sacred plant, used in Indian peace and healing rituals, and is found along the course.

Golf-course architect Paul Albanese has worked previously on such notable projects as Timberstone in Iron Mountain, Mich., Mill Creek in Rochester, N.Y., Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville, N.Y., Moose Ridge in South Lyon, Mich., Quail Ridge in Ada, Mich., and Traditions Golf Club in Edmond, Okla.

Albanese is frequently on-site with the construction crews led by industry veteran Dan Grassi fine-tuning a course that unfolds across gentle undulations, meadows and forested areas.

The course will play from approximately 7,300 to 5,000 yards and will feature multiple teeing areas to accommodate every player’s unique skill level.

Additionally, the design includes:
       •       an island green on the par-3 15th
       •       a Biarritz green on the par-3 12th
       •       holes named for and paying homage to Indian legend
       •       fescue framing the wide fairways
       •       sand bunkers and water hazards which strategically defend the course
       •       historic bridges “rescued” from around the region which lend the course a unique feel
       •       prevailing winds which add additional drama to the memorable design and round of golf
       •       two waterfalls (between the 9th and 18th holes
       •       beautifully crafted rockwork and cedar posts throughout the course
“We were given a beautiful piece of land by the Hannahville Indian Community on which to create Sweetgrass Golf Club,” says Architect Paul Albanese. “We expect Sweetgrass to instantly become the best course in the Upper Peninsula and one of the best new courses in North America upon opening.”

The Hannahville Indian Community is a band of the Potawatomi Nation. Albanese drew inspiration from the tribe’s heritage and incorporated it into the design of Sweetgrass. From bunkers named after tribal elders to areas reminiscent of long-forgotten fortress ruins, Sweetgrass offers legend and inspiration on every hole.

Known as the Keepers of the Fire, the Hannahville Band of the Potawatomi Nation also will honor legend by featuring a continuous flame next to the 10th tee box.

The island green – which jibed with the resort’s name and fit within the parameters of the land’s dictated design – also meshes with Potawatomi legend, which holds the turtle and its wisdom in high esteem. The challenging par-3 island green is surrounded by a bed of rock outcroppings.

“Paul did an excellent job of keeping the proud tradition and legend of the Potawatomi Tribe in mind while crafting this course,” says Kenneth Meshigaud, Chairman of the Hannahville Indian Community Tribal Council. “This design is a tribute to the people of this community and those who have come before us.”

In the course design, Albanese – a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and Director of Golf Course Architecture at the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland – also incorporated five steel bridges retired by nearby county departments of transportation. Originally in service in 1915, the longest and most visible bridge spans 105 feet and takes golfers to the island green.

CADDIE  ORIGIN
==============
 When Mary, later Queen of Scots, went to France as a young girl (for education & survival), Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scot game "golf."  So he had the first golf course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment.  To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her.  Mary liked this a lot. and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca- day' and the Scots changed it

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jack Minzey for this research
