MGN ON THE ROAD-THE RYDER CUP WITH SUSAN AND PAUL BAIRLEY
This week we start our Ryder Cup dairy with Susan and Paul Bairley.
MICHIGAN GOLFER TAKES ON THE CUP
By Susan Bairley
History credits the creation of the Ryder Cup to an idea proposed by
Sylvanus P. Jermain, president of Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, in
1921. So it may be fitting that 85 years later, Paul Bairley, vice
president of Inverness Country Club in, er, Chelsea, Mich., will accompany
me to this years 36th Ryder Cup contest at The K Club, Straffan, Co.
Kildare, Ireland.
I will be reporting for the Michigan Golfer and Michigan Golf News as
one of the Ryder Cup's credentialed media contingent. Paul and I also
will be part of USA Team Osprey, captained by Osprey golf and real
estate company President and CEO Mike Biber. We'll be among 46
individuals that Mike is hosting at the tourney. It's one of the many ways he's
working to give back to the game. While the group will include some
Osprey partners and business associates, there also will be Osprey's PGA
golf managers Doug Bell, Corey Crowell and Lowell Weaver; a Golf
Association of Michigan member, who won an Osprey-sponsored trip for two; a
couple of high school golf coaches; and a collegiate golfer who was
awarded one of Osprey's two academic scholarships this year.
We'll tell you more about them, the event and others we meet, from
Ireland next week and in future online news and broadcasts so stay
tuned. And as a first from this U-M grad, I'm proud to shout Go Green!

RYDER CUP COUNTDOWN-The 80's -with Bill Shelton and Michael McCafferty
as "The Haig"
In the 80's, golf began to even out between the U.S. and Europe. Each
team had two victories and the other matched ended in a tie.It was at this time that the Ryder Cup began to have more meaning for the golfing public. The 89' Ryder Cup featured the largest tented
village at any sport event in Great Britain -- 226 structures covering 350,000 gross square feet.
The 80's were captained by Dave Marr, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino
and Raymond Floyd with Europe being captained by John Jacobs and Tony
Jacklin. Europe ended a 28 year Ryder Cup drought with a win at
The Belfry Golf & Country Club, in Sutton Coldfield
1989 The Belfry, Sutton Coldfield, Eng Europe 14 U.S. 14
1987 Muirfield Village GC, Dublin, Ohio Europe 15 U.S. 13

BOOK REVIEW: "OFF THE BEATEN PATH" by Dave Marrandette
I think we are all smitten with golf courses we stumble upon from time
to time that are truly "a best kept secret". Certainly in my three
decades of covering golf, I have been introduced to many of Michigan's best
kept secrets and enjoyed many of those encounters. In Dave Marrandette
book, you get the opportunity, to examine 19 of his gems. The book is
a short and somewhat pleasant read, but I found myself wanting to see
some of these courses and their holes in color rather than in black an
white photography. The book would have had a lot more snap for me.

A FOUNTAIN OF INK:THE LIFE AND TIMES OF "WILD BILL" FOUNTAIN
The first thing I am going to do after I write this piece, is to invite
Bill Fountain as a guest speaker for the Sports and Event Markeing
class I teach at Eastern Michigan University. The class has had, Dave
Richards of Resort and Golf Marketing Services, Glda Johnson of the Ann
Arbor Bank Futures Golf Classic, Mike Husby of Candlestone Inn, Paul
Beachnau of the Gaylord Golf Mecca, Chris MacInnes and Joan O'Neil of Crystal
Mountain Resort, Mike DeAgostino of Grand Traverse Resort and Spa,
Henry Boulley Jr.. of the Native American Cup and Vanessa Bell, host of
Michigan Golfer television show and a professional golfer from England,
Their assignment is to bring some real life into the world of our
textbooks, term papers and examinations.
Bill Fountain is one of Michigan's most fertile Michigan marketing
minds in golf. He has graced the pages of the Wall Street Journal on a
couple of occasions, and most recently is featured in the August issue of
Golf Business, the publication of the National Golf Course Owners
Association. The article refers to the magic touch that Fountain has, for
openers he features all of his staff on their golf scorecard rather than
a picture of their course. The article goes on to show how Fountain
has adapted his thinking about his golf product and how he can maintain
both interest and the rate card.
This past week, was "WHACK A MUM" WEEKEND AT THE MAJESTIC GOLF COURSE
and coming up during the Thanksgiving season, will be the time you can
turn in frozen turkey for a free round of golf, with the turkey going to
the needy. Last year, I went out for his "Birdie Drop" in which a
helicopter dropped hundreds of golf balls on a green at the club, with the
closest to the pen, winning a prize. Also, this year, the course will
be hosting the 2nd Annual League Championship Series, a tournament you
will be able to see on the Michigan Golfer Channel.
You can see The Majestic at Lake Walden course by going to their web
site http://majesticgolf.com and clicking on the course video on the
front page.

TOM CLEARY IS 21-0
Tom Cleary, long time golf writer, Grand Rapids White Caps broadcaster
and one of the true wits in golf, is currently 21-0 in his coverage of
Grand Valley State University. Cleary covered both basketball and
football for the school and says that " I'm not sure they like me...they're
just too superstitious to change.."

SIFFORD TO RECEIVE 2007 OLD TOM MORRIS AWARD FROM GCSAA
Charles L. Sifford, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and the
first African-American to play on the PGA Tour, has been selected to
receive the 2007 Old Tom Morris Award from the Golf Course Superintendents
Association of America (GCSAA)
The Old Tom Morris Award is presented each year to an individual who
through a continuing lifetime commitment to the game of golf has helped
to mold the welfare of the game in a manner and style exemplified by
Old Tom Morris. Morris (1821-1908) was greenkeeper and golf professional
at the St. Andrews Links Trust Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland; a
four-time winner of the British Open (1861, 62, 64 and 67); and ranked
as one of the top links designers of the 19th century.
Toughened by a tour of duty in World War II with the U.S. Army's 24th
Infantry, Sifford risked ridicule and threats breaking through the PGA
of America's Caucasian-only clause in 1961. He won twice on the PGA Tour
and also captured the 1975 PGA Seniors Championship. An original
member of the Champions Tour, Sifford won the 1980 Suntree Classic in
Melbourne, Australia. "We are honored to have Charlie Sifford accept this
award because, like Old Tom Morris, he was also a pioneer in golf, said
GCSAA President Sean A. Hoolehan, CGCS. "I know our members will enjoy
his message."
Born June 2, 1922, in Kingwood, Texas, Sifford grew up in Charlotte,
N.C., and picked up the game at the age of 13 when he started caddying at
the Carolina Country Club in Charlotte. The first African-American to
win a PGA Tour event, Sifford shot a final round 64 to win the 1967
Greater Harford Open and then beat Harold Henning in a sudden death playoff
to capture the 1969 Los Angeles Open. Sifford won the United Golf
Association's National Negro Open six times, including five straight from
1952-56, before joining the PGA Tour in 1960 at the age of 39. Prior to
being allowed to join the tour, Sifford competed for money on the golf
course, playing in celebrity tournaments, UGA tournaments and
non-sanctioned PGA events. He also served as jazz singer Bill Eckstines personal
golf teacher at one time.
This is a much deserved honor to a man for not only his
accomplishments on the course, but the course he took in life, said fellow World
Golf Hall of Fame member Gary Player. Persistence is an ingredient that
is essential to success, and Charlie had that persistence.
Sifford published an autobiography, Just Let Me Play, in 1992 and
credits boxing legends Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis and ex-Dodger great
Don Newcomb for their support throughout his career. He also pays
tribute to African-American golfers Teddy Rhodes and Bill Spiller, who paved
the way for him in the blacks-only United Golf Association. Sifford was
the first African-American elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame on
Nov. 15, 2004. On June 22, 2006, Sifford received an honorary degree from
the University of St. Andrews as a Doctor of Laws.
"The pain, suffering and sacrifice experienced by Mr. Sifford in being
a lonely pioneer for black golfers on PGA Tour will never be forgotten
by me, Tiger Woods said. His success and personal conduct will
provide a blueprint and inspiration for myself and other aspiring black tour
players."
