WHY I LOVE THE RYDER CUP IN LESS THAN 200 WORDS
by Terry Moore
Every match is vital to the outcome. You can't pick a "bad" match
because each one is equally important in the scope of the
competition. A point is a point is a point.

Team competition affords partisanship. So long as it doesn't turn
into poor sportsmanship, rooting for one's team makes the Ryder Cup
the most exciting golf event of the year.

It's the Olympics of golf. The array of international flags along
with the old Stars and Stripes, and all of the visitors from across
the globe, contribute to an atmosphere closest to an Olympic venue.
Just listen to the chants and try not to get goose bumps.

Ryder Cup pressure. Every day is like the last day of a major to
competitors. Such intense pressure can reveal both the strongest and
the weakest welds of a player's armor.

It has pageantry. The opening and closing ceremonies provide the
classiest stage and platform in all of golf and colorfully extol
what's enduring about the game's legacy.

Intense competition breeds great golf. The Ryder Cup engenders
unsurpassed competitive willpower and concentration that always
deliver remarkable and heroic shot-making.

*Terry Moore has attended every Ryder Cup in the U.S since 1987.

--- RYDER CUP-THE 80'S
In the 80's, golf began to even out between the U.S. and Europe.
Each team had two victories and the other matched ended in a tie.
It was at this time that the Ryder Cup began to have more meaning
for the golfing public. The 89' Ryder Cup featured the largest tented
village at any sport event in Great Britain -- 226 structures covering
350,000 gross square feet.

The 80's were captained by Dave Marr, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and
Raymond Floyd with Europe being captained by John Jacobs and Tony
Jacklin. Europe ended a 28 year Ryder Cup drought with a win at The
Belfry Golf & Country Club, in Sutton Coldfield

--- RYDER CUP-THE 90'S
The decade of the 90's yielded the most competive Ryder Cup games
since they began. In fact, the competitivenessThe U.S. won three of
five matches and were captained by Dave Stockton, Tom Watson, Lanny
Wadkins, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw.

During the 90's, the games were played in Europe for the first time
being held at the Valderama GC, in Sotogrande, Spain. The 90's were
remembered for the missed par putt by Langer, that gave America the
cup, in 91, the play of Chip Beck and Ray Floyd in the 93' matches,
the play of Europeans Philip Walton of Ireland and Howard Clark of
England in 95 and the errand drive of Jay Haas, the stumbling of
America's stars in 97' and the infamous victory in 99' where
celebrating American's drew the ire of the golfing public with their
behavior.

MOE NORMAN, CANADIAN GOLFING LEGEND IS DEAD
Moe Norman, the Canadian golfing legend that many people
affectionately called "the Rain Man of Golf," died this morning. He
was 75.

Norman, who lived in an assisted living facility near his hometown of
Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, was taken to a nearby hospital early this
morning but died shortly after arriving at the hospital, according to
friends of Norman.Funeral arrangements are pending.

Norman, who was considered one of the best ball-strikers in the game
by his professional peers, had been suffering from congestive heart
failure for the past few years and earlier this winter barely
survived a case of double pneumonia. During the past two weeks,
friends said he was having severe difficulty breathing and sleeping.

"Moe Norman was our champion on a personal and professional level,"
said Andrew Wyant, President and CEO of Natural Golf Corporation.
"His personality and approach made him a bright, bold light in golf. He
was devoted to the game and wished for a world where everyone could
experience the simplicity he knew so well.

"His later years have been marked by a commitment to supporting
junior golf and a great satisfaction that his teachings were beginning to
spread," Wyant said. "We will honor his memory by continuing to tell
the world about this special man and his contributions to the good of
the game."

During his career, Norman was a two-time Canadian Amateur Champion
(1955, 1956), earning him trips to The Masters, and won more than 20
professional championships in Canada. He closed out his professional
career by winning seven out of eight Canadian Senior Open
Championships between 1980 and 1987. He was elected to the Royal
Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 1995.

An extremely shy person, yet eternally optimistic, Norman always
emphasized the positive in the game he loved.

"Be your own best friend - have a good attitude," he would often say
when putting on demonstrations at golf courses in Canada or Florida,
where he would live during the winter months. "Golf isn't supposed to
be work. It's to have fun. So have fun!"

Taken from a press release from Rick Johnson-Natural Golf Corporation

*Editor's Note: I had the chance to meet Moe at New Smyrna Beach,
Florida, a number of years back. He put on an awesome clinic. He was
one of a kind. I remember when Golf Digest "discovered" Moe about 10
years ago and did about six pages on his life. Shortly after that
story, Natural Golf became an entity.

19TH HOLE:THE LAWS OF GOLF
1. If you really want to get better at golf, go back and take it up
at a much earlier age.
2. The game of golf is 90% mental and 10% mental.
3. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is
actually the beginning of the next group of three.
4. When you look up, causing an awful shot, you will always look down again
at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you
ever want to see it again..
5. Any change works for a maximum of three holes - - or at a minimum
of not at all.
6. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play
worse.
7. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind
during your swing.
8. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either
hit one more club or two more balls.
9. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome
ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately
shank a lay-up, or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball
halfway there.
10. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas
about the golf swing

BOOK BEAT
"Can I Get a Ruling" by Dave Marrandette
Published by Clock Tower Press
http://clocktowerpress.com

Dave Marrandette has added yet another book for golf libraries that
focus on golf rules. Dave takes a bit of a different fairway, as he
teaches us some of the rules by pointing out the mistakes of others.
This "Believe it or Not" approach is refreshing in that it helps you
to understand the rules through some terrific story telling.

Frankly, most golfers will not find themselves in some of the
situations that are pointed out here. However, reading the book does
open your mind to the challenges of knowing and following the rules.
A case in point, was the recent disqualification of Michigan's newest
golf phenom, Ryan Brehm, when he stepped just outside of the scorers
tent to consult with his caddy about the number of strokes on a hole.
When he stepped outside of the tent, his original card stood as the
official one and not the one he corrected and submitted after he
verified the score with his caddy. A painful lessson a tough mistake.

"The Sweetest Game: Play Golf By Your Better Instincts"
By Cal Brown
Published by Clock Tower Press
http://clocktowerpress.com

Cal Brown has written a delightful book that sets the tone early,
with its first chapter heading, "Instruction is a Bore". While Brown
takes on the golf instruction world at times, he does make a save by
indicating that it is helpful in building your overall knowledge of
the game.

Brown introduces his audience to his literary sidekick for this
adventure, Harry Vardon. Besides having a nice grip, Vardon was also
a scholar of the game and his pronouncements hold up quite well in this
day of age. For example, "I must warn the golfer against a constant
attempt, natural but very harmful, to drive a much longer ball
everytinme than was driven at the previous stroke. He must bring
himself to understand that length comes only with experience, and
that it is due to the swing becoming gradually more natural and more
certain." The next time you come out of your golf shoes trying to hit
it further, might be a time to harken back to those words.

Actually, Brown brings back a lot of wisdom of the ancients in this
read. The book is nicely researched, thus giving you a sense of
history with the sense of mystery of the golf swing. Brown is such a
masterful storyteller that you will find this to be a quick read.
