AN AIRE OF EXCITEMENT SURROUNDS THE 2006 RYDER CUP
By Susan Bairley

It's hard not to feel the excitement surrounding the international 2006 Ryder Cup tournament. It's in the air. It's in the news. It's in conversations, the looks of surprise and smiles from those a little green with envy, when they learn Paul and I are headed to Ireland. We want to dig out the sweaters we wore at Cleary's Pub on St. Paddy's Day, yet we don't want to be clich. And we're thinking of buying two little American flag lapel pins. Just something that says, without speaking, that we want our American team to win.

I talked with Sara Durkee, the collegiate golfer from Battle Creek who won one of Osprey's two academic scholarships. It was a $2,000 award, with a Ryder Cup trip ticket. She's a freshman at Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio, near Findley. She's now on the women's golf team there. And she's about to experience the trip of a lifetime. It will be a whirlwind as she and her mother leave Tuesday for the Emerald Isle.

I am really excited about the trip, she said. I've never traveled off the continent. To be going overseas, especially for something like The Ryder Cup, is really exciting. It will be an amazing experience.

Sara is a business major at Tiffin, although her concentration's undeclared, she's considering marketing or international business.

We look forward to seeing Sara and her mom in Ireland. And we'll be ready to cheer on our hometown guys Tiger, Jim, Phil, Chad, David, Chris, Captain Tom all of them. Somehow when you're across the pond, on someone else's green turf, it's good to be on a first name basis.

PATTI BERG
GCSAA CEO STEVE MONA: ON THE PASSING OF PATTY BERG
There was no better ambassador for golf than Patty Berg. Everyone who considers themselves a fan of the game should be thankful for her contributions. I know GCSAA golf course superintendents appreciate the steadfast support and recognition she afforded them. As the winner of the 1986 GCSAA Old Tom Morris Award, Patty Berg has a special place in the association. Even in her late years, she stayed in communications with us and remained interested and engaged in the golf course management profession. She will be missed.

MGN ON THE ROAD-
West Bloomfield-Wabeek CC
In 1972 Wabeek CC was the new kid on the golf block. Designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, the club hosted the J.P. McCarthy PAL Tournament for years. Nicklaus worked with Dye and Desmond Muirhead as he was developing his own golf course design philosophy and now has returned to collaboration with The Confession GC http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/concession/ where he worked with Tony Jacklin with and the new Sebonack GC with Tom Doak http://www.sebonack.com/.

WabeekCC has lent its walls to the many photos of Nicklaus and local celebrities of the PAL Tournament. They also provide a photographic gallery of current members and junior golfers. The land was purchased by Chrysler Realty in 1972 and PAL and J.P. were a reason for the early success of the club.

Our host for the evening was Thad Gutowski. Thad owned Falcon Golf in the metro-Detroit area. Falcon Golf was a Michigan powerhouse for golf club design and manufacturing in the 60's and 70's. During that time, Gutowski was heavily involved with the PAL tournament and has some fascinating stories about those times.

The Concession-with Tony Jacklin and Vanessa Bell, A moment of golf chivalry and grace will be immortalized in a new golf course has been built in Florida, The Concession. Join Vanessa Bell as she chats with one of the most famous golfers of her country, Tony Jacklin. It was during the final match in the 1969 Ryder Cup, between Jacklin and Jack Nicklaus, when Jack Nicklaus conceded a two foot Jacklin putt on the final hole. The concession gesture meant that the Ryder Cup match for that year would end up in a tie and was viewed as a great sportsmanship gesture.. http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/concession/

And to follow that up, you can see what Dave Hill, Michigan's Ryder Cup representative, had to say about that Nicklaus move. It isn't pretty. http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/davehill/index.html

The 90's -with Bill Shelton and Michael McCafferty as "The Haig" http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/ryder/

The decade of the 90's yielded the most competive Ryder Cup games since they began. In fact, the competitivenessThe U.S. won three of five matches and were captained by Dave Stockton, Tom Watson, Lanny Wadkins, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw.

During the 90's, the games were played in Europe for the first time being held at the Valderama GC, in Sotogrande, Spain. The 90's were remembered for the missed par putt by Langer, that gave America the cup, in 91, the play of Chip Beck and Ray Floyd in the 93' matches, the play of Europeans Philip Walton of Ireland and Howard Clark of England in 95 and the errand drive of Jay Haas, the stumbling of America's stars in 97' and the infamous victory in 99' where celebrating American's drew the ire of the golfing public with their behavior.

SOMEBODY STEP ON A DUCK?
A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said, "I'm so sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away." The distressed owner wailed, "Are you sure"?

"Yes, I am sure. The duck is dead," he replied.

"How can you be so sure"? she protested. "I mean, you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room, and returned a few moments later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom.

He then looked at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog and took it out, and returned a few moments later with a cat.

The cat jumped up on the table and also sniffed delicately at the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100 percent certifiably, a dead duck."

Then the vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.

The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she cried. "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead"?

"The vet shrugged. "I'm sorry. If you'd taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the lab report and the cat scan, it's now $150
