MG ON THE ROAD
Birmingham-The Greatest Game Ever Played
The Disney PR team blew into town this week to create some buzz for
their upcoming film, "The Greatest Game Ever Played." The screening took
place at the Uptown Palladium Theater and Director Bill Paxon, writer
Mark Frost and actor Shila LaBeouf were on hand to meet with the media,
young golfers, coaches and other special invites. The story centers on
Francis Quimet, a 20 year old amateur player in 1913 that shocked the
golf world by beating England's renowned Harry Vardon and Ted Frey in the
U.S. Open.
The film is excellent in every way and we give it an "eagle" rating.
Our reporter Mike Shiels interviewed all three of the individuals
involved in the film and we hope to have those interviews on MGTV in the next
week. The film opens September 30.
The media on hand included Vartan Kupelian of the Detroit News, Tim
Hygh of Michigan Talk Radio, Skip DeWall and Jim Edwards of Ann Arbor
Media Group and the new Executive Producer of Michigan Talk Radio, Mike
Shiels. Shiels, formerly the producer of the J.P. McCarthy Morning Show on
WJR and one of Michigan's best writers, is heading back to the
airwaves. He will executive produce the 6:00 -10:00 morning show on the
Michigan Talk Radio Network, which debuts, later this month.

Park City, Utah
We were in Park City working on a project for our sister channel,
Michigan Runner Television, and fell in love with the place. Park City has
great weather and the economy is exploding. Our host for the event, was
Carol Potter, former Director of the Cadillac CVB. She indicated that
there is no unemployment in Park City. The golf is not yet bountiful as
in Michigan, but the Mountain Dell 36 hole course is a great test of
golf and the 6,000 foot altitude will allow your golf drives to soar.
Besides the two Mountain Dell courses there are a number of others in the
Salt Lake City area, Bonneville, Forest Dale, Glendale, Nibley Park,
Rose Park and Wingpointe

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION
Shanty Creek and the Michigan PGA Championship-with Tim Hygh
Shanty Creek Resort is one of Michigan's premier destinations. It has
four golf courses, three ski areas, hiking, biking and cross country
ski trails, Lake Bellaire and the great little get a way town of Bellaire
with its movie house, brew pub and scenes of the Cedar River all
contribute to time well spent there.
Our show brings you some of that charm as well as the stirring finish
for this year's Michigan PGA Championship. John DalCorobbo, director of
golf at Michigan State University's Forest Akers Golf Club, won the
$80,000 Michigan PGA Championship by shooting 65 in the final round.
Jordan Young, an assistant professional from Grosse Ile Golf and Country
Club, finished second and Brad Dean, teaching guru at Crystal Mountain,
finished a shot back for 3rd. Join our host Tim Hygh and Michigan PGA
COO Kevin Helm as they bring you the action of the championship and the
closing awards ceremony.

CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN CONDUCTS "WINTER OUTERWEAR DRIVE" FOR MICHIGAN-BASED
KATRINA VICTIMS
Crystal Mountain is conducting a "Winter Outerwear Drive" for the
Katrina Hurricane victims that were relocated to Michigan earlier this week.
"Chances are, Katrina evacuees who were flown to Michigan earlier this
week are accustomed to warmer climates," said Crystal's Communication's
Manager, Joan O'Neill. "We figured they may be in for a shock when the
cold Michigan winter arrives in the not too distant future. Crystal has
a few uniforms from previous winters -- ski school jackets, fleece
vests, etc. -- that will keep many people warm. Plus, if we can tap into
the winter outwear that people have at home that they no longer wear,
we'll be able to be ahead of the ball on filling this need that will
inevitably arise."
Crystal Mountain is collecting adult, teen and children's winter coats
of all sizes, plus snow pants, boots, mittens, hats, gloves, fleeces,
etc. now through the end of September, at which time the items will be
dispersed to the state organizations assisting the victims. All
donations must be clean/washed and in very good condition, and can be dropped
off at the Front Desk at Crystal Mountain through September 30.

GCSAA ANNOUNCES RELIEF PROGRAMS
The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) has
announced a multi-faceted relief program aimed at assisting both the public
and its members who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.
³The golf industry as a whole and GCSAA in particular has a history of
benevolence,² said GCSAA President Tim O¹Neill, CGCS. ³Our members know
all too well the force and destruction that Mother Nature can deliver.
We feel it is our responsibility to help those affected and the
contributions will be significant.²
Just as it did for the Southeast Asia Tsunami earlier this year, GCSAA
is participating with its golf brethren in the U.S. Golf Hurricane
Katrina Relief Fund. A goal of $5 million has been established. Read more
about the program.
The association also has its Emergency Relief Fund for member
distribution. These monies are set aside annually for GCSAA members who suffer
personal loss. To apply for these funds, members should contact Scott
Woodhead, GCSAA senior manager of governance, at (800) 472-7878, ext.
4418.
Supplementing the funds available for members is the Hurricane Katrina
Disaster Relief Program. Administered through GCSAA¹s philanthropic
organization the Environmental Institute for Golf these monies will be
distributed to members for personal loss. O¹Neill indicated that
donations would be sought from members, affiliated chapters and the golf
industry. For more information on this fund and to download the donation
form, click here.
Lastly, working with its partners who conduct the Golf Industry Show,
GCSAA will organize a variety of fundraising activities around the show,
Feb. 9-11 in Houston. It was originally scheduled to be conducted in
New Orleans, but officials announced the move to Houston Sept. 8 after
all conventions through March in the affected area were canceled. More
details on this program will be announced at a later date.

HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS PARTICIPATION BREAKS 7 MILLION MARK
The number of participants in high school athletics increased for the
16th consecutive year in 2004-05 and topped 7 million for the first time
in history. Participation rose by 115,157 students, to 7,018,709,
according to the 2004-05 High School Athletics Participation Survey
conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
The survey also determined that nearly 53% of students enrolled in high
schools participate in athletics.
The girls participation total of 2,908,390 set an all-time record. The
boys total also increased, reaching 4,110,319, the highest
participation in 27 years. This year¹s boy¹s participation figure is second only to the record 4,367,442 in 1977-78.
Basketball remained the most popular sport for girls with 456,543
participants, followed by outdoor track and field (428,198), volleyball
(386,022), fast pitch softball (364,759), soccer (316,104), cross country
(170,450), tennis (169,292), swimming and diving (148,154), competitive
spirit squads (84,416) and golf (64,245).
The complete 2004-05 Participation Survey will be available soon on the
NFHS Web site http://www.nfhs.org.
