MGN ON THE ROAD
Bloomfield Hills-Oakland Hills CC
Cleaning up after the Ryder Cup
The media center at the Ryder Cup was massive. There were upwards of
300 work stations available for print, radio and television media.
Everything at the tent was first class. Julius Mason, of the PGA, was
hosting the Governor of Kentucky around, when we saw him. Kentucky will be
hosting the Ryder Cup in 2008.

MGTV's Vanessa Bell, got one of her first scoops as a journalist, as
she interviewed five visiting descendants of Samuel Ryder. It turns
out, they were all from her home town in Ipswich, England. It was a fun
interview and we will have that story for you later on next month, after
everyone has had some time to recover from the massive exposure of the
Ryder Cup.

Rick Smith was beside himself, as he tried to recover from Phil
Mickelson's meltdown. On the bright side, his Golf Channel show, "The Big
Break II", which features Michigan's Bart Lower, begins next Tuesday. "Big
Break III", which features all women golfers, is being taped now.

Dave Richards was showing off his garage during the Ryder Cup. His
garage is a shrine to Michigan golf with its murals and golf photography.
Dave and his lovely bride, Denise, hosted many writers from across the
pond as well as those that have kept Michigan golf on the pages of many
golf magazines throughout the year. Dave and Kevin Frisch worked hard
in presenting Michigan golf to the world. A Tip of the Tam to them for
their efforts and the efforts of Travel Michigan.

Pete Dye was on hand for his 4th Ruder Cup, but his thoughts were in
Virginia. He is working with Chris Lutzke of the firm, Albanese and
Lutzke on a renovation of The River Course at Virginia Tech. The hurricanes
that have hit Florida, have dumped tremendous amounts of water in the
mountains and his course is suffering.

Pete was able to share the fact that he was around when Robert Trent
Jones was working on the course and when the greens underwent the first
development of a soil substructure for them. He also put in a jab to
some retro work of architects who try and copy the crowned greens of
Donald Ross. "Those greens at Pinehurst No. 2 became crowned because they
had been top dressed so many times. If Ross would had lived longer, he
would have cut the tops off those greens."

Ryder Cup spectators were greeted by cool and spectacular sunshine for
most of the week. As these happy Europeans began to get loaded in the
tents and nearby bars and then get loaded on to the buses, there seemed
to be general agreement that they had enjoyed their visit and that the
people of Michigan were very friendly to all.

Hogan's, a bar located at corner of Maple and Telegraph, was a
welcomed watering hole during the tournament. It was the closest place you
could grab a brew or two outside the gates of Oakland Hills CC, as beer
drinking was only allowed by those that had tent privilidges. The place
was jumping most of the time with Europeans being everywhere in the
place. Their smiles help to balance the frowns found on the faces of most
Americans. The big hit was a beer brewed in the spirt of the Irish,
called McSorleys. They served this marvelous thirst quencher in kidney
buster containers and it was wonderful. Ryder Cup 2006, which will be held
at the K Club in Ireland, promises to have beer at the ready for all of
its fans.

Congrats to all for a spectacular opening ceremony that was so
memorable that it took some of the sting out of the U.S. lost.

EMU ALUM ONE OF 10 CONTESTANTS IN THE BIG BREAK II
Bart Lower, a former student and golf team member at Eastern Michigan
University, will be one of 10 contestants in "The Big Break II
television series, that starts this coming Tuesday, September 28 on the Golf
Channel. This marks the second time a Michigan golfer has appeared on the
series, with Anthony Sorentino from Rochester Hills, appearing on the
first series. You can catch an interview with Anthony that MGTV did
when he visited Eastern Michigan University's Sports and Event Marketing
class last fall. Rick Smith, host of the show, is also an honorary
faculty of EMU, having been given this honor by the school's late Provost,
Ron Collins. http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show5/index.html

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION
"DAVE HILL'S RYDER CUP MEMORIES-with Jack Berry"
Dave Hill recalls the match at Royal Birkdale Golf Club and the 16-16
tie that occured with the famous "Concession" putt that Jack Nicklaus
conceded to Tony Jacklin. Dave also discusses the match that Ken Still
and he played against Brian Huggett & Bernard Gallacher, where after a
heated discussion, Hill said to Gallacher, "If you say one more word, I'm
going to wrap this 1-iron around your head." Despite the fireworks,
Brian Huggett, said, "Hill played absolutely magnificently throughout the
week. He held the team together. He stopped us winning. I mean, he won
all his matches."

In our second show, Dave Hill discusses his play at the 1973 Ryder Cup,
which was held at Murifield, Scotland. After flying some 36 hours from
a tournament in Japan, Hill developed some severe abdominal pains and
had to pull himself out of most of the matches. Instead of playing, he
assisted the Ryder Cup Captain, Jack Burke. The U.S. prevailed, 15 to
13. In 1975, Dave Hill returned to Ryder Cup play at Royal Lytham &
St. Annes in St. Annes, England. The U.S. defeated a British and Irish
team 12 1/2 to 7 1/2

In our final Dave Hill's Ryder Cup Memories interview, he discusses his
love of match play and some thoughts about where the Ryder Cup has been
and where it seems to be heading.

The Michigan Golfer is proud to bring our viewers this slice of Ryder
Cup history so nicely presented by Jack Berry and Dave Hill.

R& A WALKER CUP SQUAD ANNOUNCED
In preparation for the 2005 Walker Cup to be played at Chicago Golf
Club on 13th and 14th August, The R&A has announced a squad of 29 players.
Interestingly, the squad includes 5 players who are still under-18, Zac
Gould of Wales, Cian McNamara of Ireland, Matthew Baldwin and Oliver
Fisher of England, and Scotland¹s Paul O¹Hara.

Commenting on the inclusion of these young players Peter McEvoy,
Chairman of The R&A Selection Committee, said; "We are increasingly aware of
the quality of golf being played by many 17 and 18 year olds and
consequently we have picked 5 young men who will be around that age next
year. These five juniors have already shown that they can compete at senior
level. However we are also aware that there are other young players,
just as highly ranked, who are not in the squad and we will be keeping a
close eye on these players as well as our squad members. Make no
mistake, if they play well enough we will pick them whatever their age".

McEvoy was also keen to point out that players from outside the squad
can still force their way into the team and added, "The squad represents
the 29 players we feel are most likely to be competing for Walker Cup
team places next year. However situations change as does form and I
would not be the least surprised if players from outside the squad
challenge for or secure spots in the team".

LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK
This week¹s tip courtesy of Robin Boretti, Ibis Golf & Country Club,
West Palm Beach, Florida

Quick fix for putting speed and touch
Some days when we are putting, our touch or speed seems to be on
vacation. During a round of golf, it is difficult to fix things that go
wrong. However, for distance control, try this suggestion.

If all your putts seem to be finishing too far past the hole, resulting
in three-putts, try aiming at a target that is 1-3 feet short of the
cup.

If the opposite is true and your putts are quite short of the hole,
resulting in three-putts, try aiming at a target that is 1-3 feet past the
cup.

Your putts should start to finish closer to the hole resulting. Fewer
putts equal lower scores!

RENEWED ENERGY RESONATES AT 2004 PGA FALL EXPO
Buyers came with a positive outlook and a renewed energy that was
apparent in overflowing aisles, a packed Demo Night, filled hitting bays,
busy exhibits and full education seminars. The 2004 PGA Fall Expo,
bringing together thousands of PGA Professionals, key retailers and business
leaders with 321 golf-related manufacturers, came to a close today,
Sept. 22, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

"People had a sense of optimism coming into the PGA Fall Expo this
year. The new and returning programs, quality of exhibitors, plus a popular
host city seemed to build on that momentum," said PGA Golf Exhibitions
Vice President and Show Manager Ed Several. "The addition of the
Equipment Test Center and the Fashion Parades was very popular. Last night's
Demo Night was spectacular for retailers and exhibitors, and just a lot
of fun for everyone involved. We're excited to bring the event back to
Las Vegas in 2005."

FALL GOLF AT BLUE MOUNTAIN
by Brian Manning
Blue Mountain located in Collingwood, Ontario about two hours north of
Toronto is a four season¹s resort that was once only recognized for its
skiing, but a lot has changed over the past few years. Monterra golf,
located at the Blue Mountain resort has become on of Ontario¹s premier
golf destinations. People are traveling from all over Ontario, other
parts of Canada and from the United States to get a taste of the great
Ontario golf found at Blue Mountain. Monterra golf is Blue Mountain¹s
pride of the ultimate golf experience. Monterra literally meaning at the
bottom of the mountain, and that¹s exactly where you¹ll find the 18 holes
of great golf. Canada¹s most famous golf course architect, Tom McBroom
created this great course on the base of the Blue Mountains using the
natural topography to create many challenges for golfers and giving
every hole its own picturesque view of The Blue Mountains. Director of golf
at Monterra Ron Heeson describes Monterra as ³not exactly having
a single signature hole, but 18 different holes that have its own
challenges and character.

Blue Mountain is in the midst of transforming from a resort that was
once only famous for it¹s skiing to becoming one of Ontario¹s premier
golf destinations, as they begin the process of adding 18 more holes of
fabulous Ontario golf. Blue Mountain plans to open a new 18 hole golf
course in 2006, at Lora Bay. The course will be part of Intrawest¹s
premier brand The Raven. The Raven at Lora Bay is designed by British Open
Champion Tom Lehman, and famous golf architect Tom McBroom. The Raven
will be located on the Georgian Bay providing vistas overlooking the Bay,
offering golfers the ultimate golf experience.

Blue Mountain offers several different types of accommodations for
golfers to stay during there visit; you can stay in a variety of hotels or
condos, or stay right at the Blue Mountain village giving you only a
100 yard walk to Monterra golf. With Monterra, and The Raven at Lora Bay,
Blue Mountain will offer 36 holes of fabulous golf, challenging enough
for the most experienced golfers, but yet fun and challenging for even
the average golfer. So come check it out, as Blue Mountain is no
longer known as Ontario¹s Ski capital but a great place to relax and enjoy
the golf season which begins each year on May 1st and ends November 1st.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK-COLIN MONTGOMERIE
I'd like to talk about today and I think that it was not just myself
that was received warmly, I think all of our team were. I think we made a
huge effort to make that happen. I think from the first day, we arrived
here, Bernhard's decision to allow us to sign autographs and be open
with the crowd worked in our favor and not just myself. I think everybody
was treated well here in Detroit and Michigan and it worked well for us
all.
