MGN ON THE ROAD-Upper Peninsula

Copper Harbor-Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and Golf Course
Built in the late 30's to give out of work miners some employment, the
Keweenaw Mountain Lodge and Golf Course is testimony to the adage that
if you build it and build it right, they will come. At the very top of the
Keweenaw Peninsula, it is the Michigan golf course where fall pushes
out winter and winter pushes out fall. A magic spot in a magic state.

Escanaba -Gladstone CC,Terrace Bluff, Highland GC, Irish Oaks and Escanaba CC

Escanaba, the Golf Naturally place has had a good year. We chatted with
Nancy Winneroski of the Delta County CVB and representatives of Escanaba
CC,Terrace Bluff and Gladstone GC. The group indicated that weather and
the economy took their toll in 2002, but both have been kinder this year.
Business has held its own this year, and they are thankful for that. They have
also added a new nine to their golf arsenal with Iris Oaks, a course that is
part of a retirement community, coming on board. The second nine
will be opened by next year.

CVD Golf Academy, owned by Casey VanDamme, who mentored under the Jim
Mclean golf school, has opened up at Terrace Bluff. The school was booked
most of the year and was deemed a great success.

Most of the outside golf from the area comes from Chicago, Milwaukee and
Green Bay. However, they continue to go after those Michiganians South of
the bridge. Nancy Winneroski chairs a group of golf courses that have tossed
some marketing dollars into a kitty and made a cat out of it. See what
they offer at http://travelbaysdenoc.com/golf.html

Marquette-Greywalls

The ballots need not be sent out, let the writers take a year off, the
course of the year in 2004 will be awarded to Greywalls GC, designed
by Mike DeVries. Fresh off his remarkable work at Pilgrims Run, Diamond
Springs and The Kingsley Club in Traverse City, Mike has been holed up in
the north country building what may become the most awe inspiring course
this state has seen. The course will be soon be mentioned in the same breath
with Bay Harbor, Arcadia Bluff and the Gailes for its unique design.
For a preview, visit http://www.marquettegolf.org

According to Marc Gilmore, head professional at Marquette since 1983,
Mike was the winner out of 20 golf architects that indicated an interest in
the project. His work was the last the building committee looked at, and when
they pulled into The Kingsley Club for an inspection, they told Marc, this
is what we have been looking for.

Mike, who worked at Crystal Downs as a young man, has interned with Tom
Doak and Tom Fazio. You can see his work at http://devriesdesign.com

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION-DOUBLE FEATURE

JEFF DANIELS COMEDY GOLF JAM WITH CRAIG BRASS & THE CADDIES OF FRENCH LICK II

JEFF DANIELS COMEDY GOLF JAM

This is the craziest golf tournament since Alex Karras was blowing up
greens at Torrey Pines. People play a lot of money to attend this
tournament, because of its craziness and the fact that the revenues go
to support the Purple Rose Theater. Join Craig Brass as he tries to bring
sense to this show. You will love the "Dueling Brandos" Stella!!!!!!

THE CADDIES OF FRENCH LICK PART II

The Caddies of French Lick, Oral Carnes, Junior Carnes,Louie Roach,
Bill Kellams,John Parker, Jack Carnes and Wayne Carnes are back with
another batch of tall tales of when they were caddies at French Lick.
Hosting today's show is Dave Harner, golf professional at French Lick.
In the second installment of this five part series, the boys talk about
having Joe Louis at the resort and how he lost lots of golf money with
members of his entourage. They also discuss the time that Bing Crosby
played the MidwestGolf Tournament in 1946.

THE BIG BREAK IS COMING

I just saw the first installment of the Big Break, coming to the Golf
Channel on October 7. I must admit it was quite entertaining. The show
has a reality theme to it, in that 10 golfers start out in the competition,
with the final golfer being the one who gets to compete in four Canadian
Tour events that will be telecast next year.

The opening show has co-host Katherine Roberts welcoming the golfers to
Gaylord and Treetops resort. The first show has the golfers hitting a
knock down shot through a glass pane about 50 yards out in the fairway,
a second concept has the 10 golfers hitting a drive down a highway trying
to hit a Club Car or backboard to win the Club Car. Co-host Rick Smith,
does not make an appearance until the second show.

It is fun, it is in Michigan and stars one of Michigan's own, Rick Smith.

JOURNALISM MAG CUTS BACK, BOOSTS ONLINE

Editor & Publisher, the trade journal of the journalism biz, is cutting
its print edition back to monthly. It's a sign of the times, Steve Outing,
who writes online columns for the magazine, told CBS MarketWatch. Beginning
in January, E & P will focus day-to-day industry coverage online and hold
the monthly print edition for features, analysis and commentary. "I do
believethat the power of the Internet makes weekly trade magazines an
endangered species," Outing said. "For any trade publisher to continue to
dominate its industry, it must have a very strong presence online."

WHATEVER BECAME OF SKIP DEWALL?

Skip DeWall, former publisher at golf-book-giant Clock Tower Press, has
joined the Ann Arbor Media Group (AAMG). Charged with building a new
list of golf titles for the rapidly growing AAMG, Mr. DeWall has become the
company's Associate Publisher and will launch 12 new books in 2004 under
the Sports Media Group imprint. Ann Arbor Media Group is embedded within
a major book printer, combining a strong knowledge of the golf business,
editorial expertise, and high quality production.

According to Jim Edwards, AAMG Publisher, "This joining together of
high-quality golf titles and manufacturing will allow us to develop a
wide variety of new books for the market; to handle every aspect of our
production and printing in-house; and to keep cost down so we can offer
very attractive retail pricing, which we believe is of the utmost importance
to reach new and existing readership."

"You will see product quite soon. We already have books in production
with many more already signed and in the pipeline. We have set up accounts
with all the major distributors and booksellers, and we're building our website.
In addition to book distribution through traditional channels, I plan
to be aggressive with direct mail campaigns. I think our books, because of
their unique content, are perfect for direct-to-consumer marketing," DeWall
said.

Building on the strength of his involvement with numerous award-winning
golf books, DeWall and AAMG are expected to establish a strong presence
in the golf category. "We'll be able to offer some unique services to our
authors including design and printing flexibility, and an entrepreneurial
approach to sales. AAMG has signed some of the top authors in the field,"
DeWall said. AAMG will publish books on a wide variety of topics including golf
course architecture and design, classics, golf history, instruction, golf
fiction, the Majors, and autobiographies and biographies. They have launched a
list that will publish books under the banner "Vintage Golf Series Edition,"
featuring enhanced versions of classic titles, the first of which is Bobby
Jones: Portrait of a Champion. The 75 th anniversary of the Grand Slam
winning all four of golf's Major events - is set for 2005, and Bobby Jones
is the only golfer in history to accomplish the feat. AAMG already has
a book in production celebrating this accomplishment.

BEAVER CREEK RESORT TO EXPAND

By Dan Sanderson -Traverse City Record-Eagle staff writer

A Gaylord area resort is continuing a $6 million expansion that includes
condominiums, RV camping and a possible motel. The Beaver Creek Resort
on West Otsego Lake Drive recently added four condos and plans to add 10
more units next year, resort president Larry Bowden said.

Meanwhile, local officials hope to secure $876,000 in grants to upgrade
three miles of the road that serves the resort and the Otsego County Park
and Campgrounds, which added additional campsites two years ago. Beaver
Creek also plans to upgrade and expand its camping area by 79 campsites
and build 22 condominiums near the resort's golf course, The Natural. Plans
also call for an apartment building or a motel.

Bowden hopes to attract more recreational vehicle customers and meet
continued demand for the golf, snowmobile and family getaway packages.
The resort features an indoor pool and waterslide, as well as a miniature
golf course. Bowden said his resort has found a niche by providing affordable
recreation. "A lot of people can't afford the high-end resorts and we're
doing very well," he said.

HOLE IN ONE CLUB

Bob Myrick of Washington, used a 7 wood to reach the 155 yard 16th hole
at Greystone GC and then he watched it roll into the cup. It was his first
hole in one after 53 years of golf. Congrats Bob and a Tip of the Tam.
