OCTOBER
October turned by maple's leaves to gold;
The most are gone now;
here and there one lingers;
Soon these will slip from the twig's weak hold,
Like coins between a dying miser's fingers

MIKE MCCAFFERTY, "THE HAIG", WILL APPEAR ON WEST WING THIS SUNDAY
Yes, we know that the following it is a shameless plug from proud
parents. However, Mike McCafferty did a great job in portraying "The Haig"
in our Ryder Cup series with our host Bill Shelton this past year, and
we wanted to alert his fans of the upcoming show. Mike has been hot of
late, being cast in Six Feet Under, ER, The Shield and now West Wing.
Again, for those Mike McCafferty fans, West Wing is on this Sunday at
8:00.

MG ON THE ROAD
Gaylord-Treetops, Otsego Club, The Natural
The Otsego Club is just starting to dress up with its fall colors. The
Classic and the spectacular Triibute will continue to attract fall
golfers who will marvel not only at the courses, but all the fall eye candy
as well. Scott Chesley, never met a real estate buyer he didn't like
and he continues to sell the new units at the resort. This is a special
place in our state.
http://otsegoclub.com
Larry Bowden is transforming Marsh Ridge Resort into yet another phase
of development and improvement. The resort was known for years as
Norden Hem. In the late 70's and early 80's new lodging was added to the
speciality lodging that was such an attraction for the cross country
skiers. Jack Bott bought the place and built a golf course on it and
hired Dick Weber to transfer it into Gaylord's version of the Magic
Kingdom. However, the resort seemed to lose its way when Weber left to pursue
other interests. With golf rounds down and an increasing amount of new
lodging facilities coming on board, Bott decided to sell the lodging
end to Bowden. Bowden, who developed Beaver Creek Resort thought that the
best bet was to take the facilities and develop condo units out of
them. He has sold two and is bringing others on board.
On the golf side, Don White indicated that the course has a good year
and that his nascent golf schools had success. Marsh Ridge GC was
designed by Mike Husby, who also designed The Loon GC in the Gaylord area.
http://marshridge.com
Steve Helmer, golf professional at The Natural, said that the golf
season got back on track after a tough May and June. He said that July was
even with last year and August and September experienced growth. While
not trying to appear to optimistic, he does feel that Gaylord has
turned the corner this year. Paul Beachnau, the Excutive of the Gaylord CVB,
echoed those sentiments as well.

Toronto Golf Becoming a Force
While Michigan retreats from its building 20 courses a year heydays,
Toronto seems to be the heir apparent. We were in town last month to
attend the John Daly vs. Niagara Falls event and experience his latest
course, Thundering Waters Golf Club. It was here that we picked up on
the buzz on Toronto area golf. We visited the excellent Osprey Valley's
Heathland a couple of years ago and noted that they have added, Hoot
and Royal Hoot, all designed by Doug Carrick.
The Devil's Paintbrush and Devil's Pulpit are two terrific courses by
Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. The people who invented Trivia Pursuit
are the owners here and little money was spared on building these two
completely different courses. Eagles Nest by Doug Carrick is also a show
stopper and Bond Head, by Michael Hurdzan and Jason Straka has also
attracted a following. We visited The National by George and Tom Fazio
two years ago and found it extremely demanding. Finally, Glenn Abbey, a
course designed by Jack Nicklaus continues to attract golfers. On the
strength of the course and his numerous stops at the Canadian Open that
was played there, Nicklaus found himself as the only American to the
Canadian Hall of Fame. The Canadian HOF resides at Glen Abbey as well
as housing the offices of the Canadian Tour. Great stuff in Toronto.

A Tour of Wild Bluff
We conclude our Bay Mills Open Players Tournament coverage with a tour
of Wild Bluff Golf Club. The course received rave reviews from the
Executive Director of the Canadian Tour as well as many of the golf
professionals. It is a special course and much credit needs to go to the
Superintendent, John Holberton and his ground crew for having it in great
shape. So click on the link and enjoy a great golf course and the
haunting music of Micki Free.

Treetops Pepsi Fall Charity Invitational
The golf season went out with a bang at the 18th Annual Treetops Pepsi
Fall Charity Invitational. It was a weekend that probably brought
tears of joy to the accounts receivable department as 408 golfers played
and stayed at Treetops, where they played the Smith Signature, Fazio and
Jones golf courses.
This is serious golf and the competition for pros and amateurs is
intense. Some of those on hand that we had a chance to chat with were Denis
Husse of Tyrone Hills, Tom McGee of Grand Traverse Resort and Spa,
Lanse Avery of Pine Hollow, Kurt Kraly of Club Car, Judy Mason of
Michaywe, Former CEO of Treetops Jerry Albert, Patti Butcher, Dennis Fabbri of
Lakeview Golf Resort, Kevin McKinley and Director of Golf, Scott Head.
George Blaha was on hand to handle the MC for the banquet dinner and
live auction. There were a lot of things to bid on, with money going to
some of the traditional charities of the tournament as well as those
people impacted by Katrina. Scott Head, the Director of Golf for
Treetops indicated that the tournament has raised and distributed over
$350,000 to various charities since its inception.
We also chatted with Mark Wildeman, Superintendent of Treetops, who is
closing out another successful year as the superintendent of the five
famed courses. Mark has 81 holes of golf to ready for the last vestiges
of fall golf and then the preparation for the upcoming winter in
Gaylord.
Our show also includes some vintage video of Robert Trent Jones, Harry
Melling and Rick Smith at the grand opening of Treetops. Enjoy.

THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED OPENS THIS WEEK
Golfers have the opportunity to go inside this month for some golf, by
watching Bill Paxon's "The Greatest Game Ever Played". It is a
terrific film that will quickly jump into the top ten of golf films. It is
opening nationally this week after some special screenings the past three
weeks. We give the film a rating of Eagle.

THE BIG BREAK LADIES OFF TO PARADISE FOR SHOT AT BIG BREAK
The Golf Channelıs Big Break reality show is crossing the ocean again,
as producers have selected Turtle Bay Resort in Oahu, Hawaii, as the
production site for the seriesı latest installment, The Big Break V:
Hawaii.
The huge popularity of the ladiesı version of The Big Break series on
The Golf Channel has given rise to the networkıs decision to bring the
ladies back in 2006 with an all-new cast and host of challenges that
will test their will to succeed and, for one, fulfill her dream of playing

NEW GOLF REPORT FROM NGF LINKS ROUND PLAYED AND WEATHER
A new weather impact analysis report from Pellucid indicates that, on a
national weighted basis, Golf Playable Rounds (GPH) was off 1.8% for
the first six months of 2005 versus the same period in 2004. First half
rounds played as reported by Golf Datatech declined 1.3%, so that
industry performance was slightly better than what Mother Nature gave to work
with.
Results by region varied significantly, from the Western Great Lakes
being up 18% to the South Intermountain being down 37%. Among the
heavy-hitter regions (those with the highest number of golf facilities), CA
regions were still struggling to make up for an incredibly poor spring.
The three CA weather regions (North Coast, South Coast & Interior
Valley) showed declines ranging from 4 to 8%. These declines were offset by
good performance in the key Texas region, up almost 15%.
The report also provides a breadth-tracking scorecard, which takes into
account where the bad weather is occurring and for how long. Reading
this breadth barometer, weather unfavorability occurred in 13 regions for
the first six months of the year as compared to favorability in only 6
(with the remaining 5 being neutral or within +/-2% to the 2004
figure). This means that the amount of "bad news" being published is probably
drowning out "good news" by about 2:1.
For the report, Pellucid, in collaboration with weather information
provider WeatherBank, divided the U.S. into 24 weather-based regions for
golf. For each US facility, Pellucid is now capable of producing the
Golf Playable Hours (GPH) and Capacity Rounds (CR) for every year from
1995-2004 and YTD 2005 including the critical 10-year average figures for
all measures.
