Belding-Candlestone Inn
If anyone can make money in a golf depression, it is Mike Husby. The
"Hus" has had managment gigs at Sugar Springs, Michaywe, Marsh Ridge,
The Otsego Club, two stops at The Loon, Wild Bluff GC at Bay Mills and
now his second stop at Candlestone Inn. His figures are up, but he
admits it has been a struggle.

Candlestone Inn is in the process of being sold, and if so, Husby will
remain on board as GM as well as working on course renovation. Husby,
has designed 18-hole courses at Marsh Ridge, The Loon and Wild Bluff,
and two nine- hole courses at Indian Lake GC and Newberry CC.

Grand Haven-Grand Haven Golf Club
This past week, Dr. John Rooney, new owner of the Grand Haven Golf
Club and Redstone, the developer group, announced the building of 42
single housing units on the the old driving range at Grand Haven Golf
Club. Known as The Retreat, the new housing development flies in the
face of challenging real estate sales, but all on board feel that this
property is special.

Grand Haven Golf Club was designed by W. Bruce Matthews and his son,
Jerry Matthews in 1965. The course quickly rose in stature, being
named as one of the top 50 public courses in the U.S. by Golf Digest.
Matthews was on hand to discuss the history of the course and the
changes that have occurred since 1965.

Dr. Rooney, retired from teaching at Oklahoma State University, is no
stranger to Michigan, having participated in the first Michigan Golf
Summit. Dr. Rooney loves Michigan in the summer, much as we love
Florida in the winter. Michigan affords Rooney and his family,
delightful weather and surroundings, while Stillwater wrestles with
torrid summer heat.

The Grand Opening audience was also shown a seven minute video on
"Fallen Heroes", a movement that started this year with Rooneys' son,
Dan. Held on September 1, "Fallen Heroes" captured the imagination of
the golf world and their wallets for a cool one million dollars.
Buoyed by the success it had, the program will continue in 2008, with
a new date, Memorial Day Weekend. The movement received some serious
exposure inSports Illustrated, Golf Digest, and USA Networks "PGA Tour
Sunday." Dan Rooney is a fighter pilot for the United States and has
served two missions in Iraq. He was moved when he saw a casket of a
"fallen hero" being delivered to Grand Rapids for burial. He felt that
something needed to be done to create not only recognition for these
soldiers who have paid the ultimate price, but also a scholarship
program that would help members of their family. Dr. Rooney indicated
that a number of universities have stepped forward with scholarships
to honor the idea.

We had a real treat as we had the opportunity to share the tee box
with Jerry Matthews in a round of golf after the Grand Opening
ceremony. The course record was safe after the first hole, but we had
a nice time playing. After the round, superintendent Jerome Blahnik
met with Matthews and not only told him how they had brought the
course back to life, but showed him photos of his work as well.
Matthews, who teaches classes in golf course design and maintenance at
MSU, sometimes finds himself in these types of mentoring and
monitoring situations. Grand Haven is marketing the course as the Pine
Valley of the Michigan. The "Pine Valley" look is not quite there, but
with Jerome Blahnik on the job, it only remains a matter of time until
this happens.

Stanwood
In my "Travels with Jerry" trip last week, I asked Jerry Matthews to
discuss his easiest and hardest golf course design. According to
Matthews, the easiest course to design was Timber Ridge and the
hardest was St. Ives. "The St. Ives site had so many undulations mixed
with lakes and wetlands, I went through many designs before we got it
right", Matthews said. Armed with that knowledge, I took another look
at St. Ives. From the first hole, where your second shot has a 40 -50
foot drop to the green to the last hole, the course has a roller
coaster look and feel to it. Let's face it, Matthews has designed over
100 golf courses and if this course stood out to him, it is notable.
http://naturalcoursedesign.com
http://stivesgolf.com

Tullymore, the first of two Jim Engh's Michigan designs, has matured
brilliantly since I visited the course during its grand opening. Engh
did design work in Europe and Asia for golf prosBernhard Langer and
Isao Aoki. He stuck out his own shingle in 1991 and has never looked
back. . His courses are unique and award winning.Tullymore, which
opened in 2002 was named the No. 1 New Upscale Public Course in
America by Golf Digest. Its fame continues to grow, being named among
the Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses in America by Golf Digest.

Villages of Tullymore
Last week, the Grand Opening for the Villages of Tullymore was held.
It is a $15 million home and condo development at the Tullymore Golf
Course site. Mecosa L.L.C purchased the Tullymore and St. Ives
properties from Canadian Lakes Development Co. earlier in the year for
$15 million. The Villages at Tullymore will build out to 340 homes and
condos with a 13,000 square-foot clubhouse and a new 13 acre lake.

GM Kevin O'Brien is obviously excited about the project and shares his
thoughts with us. See him on You Tube

REMEMBERING: W. BRUCE MATTHEWS
=================================
West Michigan was not really my beat during our early years with the
Michigan Golfer. Our editor, Terry Moore was working that part of the
state on the ad and editorial side. However, one day I found myself
over that way and thought I would stop by and take a look at Grand
Haven Golf Club, a client that had been very good to us. This was the
home course of W. Bruce Matthews, a legend in Michigan golf. Not only
had he designed a ton of golf courses in Michigan during his lifetime,
but he was responsible for getting the Michigan State University Turf
Grass School off the ground.

When i arrived at Grand Haven, I was fortunate to find Mr. Matthews
enjoying the early morning sun by the first tee. He was very cordial
and willingly gave me a half hour or so talking about his life in
golf. It was my only time to see him, but our meeting was something
that I think about every time I meet with his son, Jerry

As I rode around with Jerry Matthews last week, talk turned to his
father. He said he was playing a couple of holes with his father, who
was still hitting some shots in his ninth decade.. At 90, or even
years before that, W. Bruce Matthews' sight was faltering. When he and
Jerry approached the last hole they were to play that day, he told
Jerry that he could not see the green very well. Jerry said, he helped
his dad select a club, told him the distance, pointed him in the right
direction and then watched his father hole out the shot. If that was
not his last shot in golf, let's make it so.

We have listed the courses he designed by himself and then those he
built with his son, Jerry.

SHOW THEM THE MONEY
======================
Which of the professional and college sports events draws the most
affluent attendees? Probably PGA Golf, you would guess. Close, but PGA
Golf is nosed out by MLS Soccer, 41% of whose attendees were from
households with incomes of $100,000 or more. Just 38% of PGA Golf
event attendees were from households in that income bracket. Of
course, PGA Golf attendees could brag of an attendance almost three
times as great as attendance at MLS Soccer events.

Major League Baseball, NBA and NFL were closely matched in drawing
attendees with incomes of $100,000 -- with the three drawing 28%-30%
of attendees from that income bracket.

Professional tennis, college football and college basketball drew
25%-26% of their attendees from the $100,000-plus income bracket.

Professional boxing was at the other end of the spectrum, drawing just
9% of their attendees from the $100,000-plus income bracket.

For adults 18 years and older, that information is drawn from the NSGA
210-page report _Sports Attendance and TV Viewership -- 2007._ The
mail survey, conducted in April 2007, covers 29 professional and
college sporting events.

In the report, Major League Baseball drew the most attendees, almost
30 million. For the 2006 season MLB reported an attendance of slightly
less than 76 million. Given attendance at multiple games as indicated
in the report, the 30 million figure seems to accurately reflect
persons 18 and older who saw a big league game in 2006.

as well as from other sources.

A TOUGH AUGUST
================
After rising 4.1% in July, August rounds played fell 2.7%. Severe
weather in the Midwest was the primary cause, according to the
National Golf Foundation. Year-to-date rounds slipped to 0.8% through
August.

The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800 golf
facilities. For the full year 2006, rounds played were up 0.8%.

With the center of the country being hard-hit by Mother Nature, the
Lower and Upper Midwest registered the worst August performances
regionally. The Lower Midwest fell 8.6%; the Upper Midwest, 4.6%. The
Central/South Florida region (up 2.5%) had the best showing in August.

Of the 11 regions surveyed, eight showed year-to-date declines. The
Southwest region was the strongest, up 2.7%. The Southeast and
Northeast regions also showed increases. The sharpest decline was in
the South Central region, down 8.3% year-to-date. The Gulf Coast
region trailed, down 4.4%.

For the eight months, play at value courses (those with peak season
weekend green fees with cart below $40), was down 1.0%. At premium
public courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart
above $70) rounds played have risen to 0.4%. At standard courses
($40-70), play was down 0.1%. Overall, rounds played at all public
courses fell 0.6% year-to-date.

Private courses didn_t do quite as well, with rounds played for the
eight months falling 2.0%.

At the national level, Golf Playable Hours (GPH) for August declined
4.4% compared to last year, according to Pellucid Corp. as reported in
the previous newsletter.

According to Golf Datatech, rounds weredown 1.6% in August 2007
compared toAugust 2006 and are down0.5%year to date. The report
includes3,225 reporting courses.

Good to see Tom Gillis back on the leaderboard, even if it is the
Nationwide Tour. Gillis, who was on the PGA Tour two years ago has
fallen off the map the since then, playing Gateway Tour, Nationwide
Tour and getting as many sponsor exemptions as he can. Gillis, who led
after three rounds, finished 8th with a one under par Sunday finish.
Michigan's Jason Budha, (see our cover

Adare Golf Club with Cathal O'Sulivan
Ireland's Adare Manor was the site for Robert Trent Jones final major
golf course design. It is now the home of the Irish Open and was
recently extended to its 7453 yards. The Maigue River and a 14 acre
lake provide the usual water hazards that Robert Trent Jones so loved
to create.

Lahinch Golf Club with Jennie McCafferty and Bob McCavery
Lahinch Golf Links almost has it all. They have the history, built in
1892, designer blood lines in Old Tom Morris and Alister MacKenzie, a
storied hole in No. 5 and a location on the Atlantic Ocean. What they
don't have, according to professional Bob McCavery, is the
infrastructure to support a major tournament. It is not near a major
city, they have narrow roads and there are few hotels. Our video gives
you a nice look at the town, course and a recounting of the history by
Bob McCavery, who has been the pro since 1959 after he took over from
his dad, who was there for a couple of decades himself. Enjoy
