Buck's Run
We were up in Mt. Pleasant to tape the fall colors at Buck's Run, but alas, we were a tad too early. Bucks' Run had a full parking lot for some great fall golf and will most likely be full again at the Toughman Tournament on the 28th.

Winding Brook
Winding Brook located just off 27 in Shepherd, is an interesting course that has not had a lot of publicity. It is primarily for the locals, but does pick up some of the US 27 traffic that is heading North. It gets its share of play and can offer a challenge as noted by the fact 10 of its 18 holes have water.

MGCOA League Championship Series
Kate Moore of the MGCOA and Stewart Healey of Handicomp are optimistic that their new League Championship Series will be the start of something big. Handicomp recently developed the software for league handicapping and MGCOA helped put on the tournament to test it out. Other big MGCOA guns on hand for the first time event, included Jim Scott of Gull Lake View, Bill Fountain of the Majestic at Lake Walden and Steve Ramsey, current MGCOA President, of Chisholm Hills. The LCS, played on Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath, seemed to get off to a great start.

GREENSBORO-HITING THEM STIFF
A letter from Chip Atkinson in this Sunday's New York Times http://nytime.comtook on the PGA Tour for giving Charlotte's Wachovia Championship a more favorable date, May 2-8, on the schedule while continuing to offer another weak date for the Greensboro Open, September 26-October 2.

The article pointed out that the PGA Tour talks about providing golf for the masses, but has turned its back on them by dissing a storied tournament that has been put on totally by sponsors and has offered rich purses. MG has covered the Greensboro in the past and noted that the tournament is extremely well organized and that there was a espirit de corp with the volunteers. It is always tough to be challenged by a younger event that has substantial resources (6 million dollar purse) and a ton of pretty greens, fairways and a first rate field.

Editor's note: On Sunday, Tiger Woods continued his mastery of the World Golf Championships by winning the WGC-American Express Championship. The win was his 10th in 19 individual stroke-play World Golf Championships events, and his 46th career PGA Tour victory. He also becomes the first player to win the tournament four times (1999, 2002, 2003, 2005). Woods has now earned $12,977,500 in 19 World Golf Championships starts, a figure that would rank 37th all-time on the PGA Tour career money list.

JOEL SCHUCHMANN [PGA Tour media respresentative]: We'd like to welcome the four-time champion of the American Express Championship. Tiger Woods, congratulations on your sixth win of the year and your 10th World Golf Championship title. Start with some opening comments on a great week for you.

TIGER WOODS: Yeah, it turned out to be a great week. You know, I didn't really get off to the greatest of starts today. I didn't feel like I was hitting the ball all that well, but I just kind of hung in there and made a big putt on No. 9 to save par. And then from there got it going, made three straight, and then went back in the tournament. [John Daly] wasn't running away with it. I held it together. Made a mistake on 14, made bogey there, made birdie at 16 and was very fortunate just to get into a playoff.

Q.: When Daly missed the putt on 16, you kind of bowed your head a little bit, obviously a different reaction than we've seen in a playoff with Bob May or Chris DiMarco. Can you just talk about the difference?

TIGER WOODS: It just felt so bad. That's not how you're supposed to win a golf tournament. We're battling, and J.D. played beautifully all week. It shouldn't end like that. We should be playing 17. I was thinking I had 160 and I'm hitting a drawing 8-iron and kind of rehearsing what I have to do, and when he missed the putt, I just felt so bad because he played so solidly the entire week.

He was up there every day. And to put yourself on top of that board, it's a lot of work, and then to hit this -- first of all, hitting driver there in a playoff was pretty impressive, to pull out driver there, and then an unbelievable second shot through the trees. I mean, come on. He lands it there just over the bunker, perfect, pin high, ho-hum, and then I felt like I had to make my putt to win the tournament. And I left it just short and I felt the tournament was probably over, that he'd probably just pour it in there, and he made a mistake. Q.: Do you feel that because it's J.D., different than maybe Ernie, Vijay or Phil [Mickelson], that he brings that extra, you and him, the two biggest bombers and the personalities you guys have?

TIGER WOODS: I think so. J.D. brings huge galleries everywhere he goes. It's always electric any time he plays. On top of that, when he's playing well, it's even more so. I played right in front of him the first two days. He'd drive it on par 4s and people are going nuts, bananas, screaming. He brings a certain atmosphere all to its own.

Q.: Right at the end of regulation there was a moment where you and John were walking together. Can you share what the conversation was? Do you remember the conversation?

TIGER WOODS: Yeah. Well, I have to kind of change a few words around (laughter). It was basically, "Here we are going into a playoff and good luck (smiling)."

Q.: We've become so accustomed to the fist pumps and gestures after a victory. To have a hand over the eyes, is that the most apologetic win you've ever had in your career?

TIGER WOODS: Yeah, because you feel so bad for J.D. to play that well and hit that many good golf shots and leave the tournament. We all had to come get him, and to have it end that way, that's not how it should have ended. We should have been going to 17 to see who could make birdie. He just hit a bad putt at the wrong time. THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED EXHIBIT AT WORLD GOLF HALL OF FAME ON OCTOBER 14
The World Golf Hall of Fame, working with Walt Disney Pictures, whose film The Greatest Game Ever Played released in theaters throughout the United States on Sept. 30, will unveil a special exhibit on the subject of the film. Opening on Friday, Oct. 14, the Hall of Fame exhibit will feature costumes and props from the film, plus original artifacts from the 1913 U.S. Open playoff between Hall of Fame members Francis Ouimet and Harry Vardon, and Ted Ray.

NEW REPORT: SQUARE FOOTAGE IN OFF-COURSE GOLF RETAILING INCREASES
Longitudes Group announced the results of its 2005 Market Trend Report on off-course golf retailing in the U.S. The research tracks the growth and contraction of the off-course retail market analyzing the last year’s state-by-state changes both in the number of >doors and total square feet.

Among the key findings: Some 8.7 million square feet is the estimated retail space dedicated to the off-course channel in the U.S. marketplace. Square footage in the channel nationwide grew this year by 4.5%, while the number of new doors expanded by just 1%. Big box stores (greater than 10,000 square feet) represent 11% of the doors, but nearly 40% of the square footage in the market.

The 2005 report provides a complete assessment of average square footage growth and contraction for the industry by categorizing store segments based on size from Big Box down to boutiques.

In the overall off-course retail segment, the trend shows the large format retailers are aggressively opening stores across the country, putting some smaller stores out of business.

According to the Longitudes Group, the research indicates that local variables such as the public/private golf culture, the number of avid golfers, golf participation rates and the cost of commercial space influence average store size and the number of stores that are serving the golf population.

The retail research was conducted by Longitudes Group, LLC, first in 2004, and replicated in 2005 by contacting more than 1,800 retail locations categorized in various databases as off-course golf retail. PLAYER STARS IN THE HBO TV SERIES-CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
The HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm features verité-style footage of Larry David (playing himself) at home, at work and around town, as he gets into predicaments with fictional and real-life personalities.

While on the west coast of the United States to participate in the Greater Seattle Champions Classic, The Jeld-Wen Tradition and the First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, Gary Player did a taping of Curb Your Enthusiasm - episode six. Player, starring as himself, hit it off with lead actor Larry David and even gave David a golf lesson in between takes.

To keep the narrative fresh and spontaneous, Curb Your Enthusiasm is shot without a script; the cast is given scene outlines and often improvise lines as they go. The result is an unpredictable and entertaining format that's unlike anything else on TV.

BOOK REVIEW:"PEBBLE BEACH GOLF AND THE FORGOTTEN MEN
Ann Arbor Media Group went back to the well for another caddie themed book, this time about the caddies at famed Pebble Beach. In 2004, the publishing firm came out with the book; "Men on the Bag: The Caddies of Augusta National" and did very well with it.

"Pebble Beach: Golf and the Forgotten Men, traces the caddies that worked at Pebble Beach and those golfers that helped to immortalize the course. Author Jerry Stewart, like Ward Clayton of "Men on the Bag" has spent a portion of his journalistic life at the site of his research. Stewart has worked as a correspondent for the Monterey County Herald and was a contributing writer for a book on Tiger Woods' victory at the 2000 U.S. Open:"The Major: 7 Days at Golf's Greatest Championship."

It brings back memories for those that have watched the various events at Pebble Beach over the years or have had the opportunity to tee it up for an amazing day of golf. The book brings back the memorable days of Crosby, Nicklaus, Kite, Watson, Phil Harris as seen through the eyes of those that carried their bags.

It is a quick and delightful read.

The book will be available in November, just in time for the holiday season. Published by Ann Arbor Media Group, it will retail for $24.95. It has yet to appear on their website http://annarbormediagroup.com Another recent book from Ann Arbor Media Group, "Sam: The One and Only Sam Snead",written by Al Barkow, is also available in book stores.
