MGCOA League Championship Series
Kate Moore of the MGCOA and Stewart Healey of Handicomp are optimistic that their new League Championship Series is the start of something big for Michigan golf. Handicomp recently developed the software for league handicapping and MGCOA helped put on the tournament to test it out. Other big MGCOA guns on hand for the first time event included Jim Scott of Gull Lake View, Bill Fountain of the Majestic at Lake Walden and Steve Ramsey, current MGCOA President and owner of Chisholm Hills. The LCS, played on Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath, seemed to get off to a great start. To check out the action go to

The Greatest Game Ever Played
Michael Patrick Shiels, one of Michigan's greatest golf writers, has an enchanting interview with Director Bill Paxton, who not only discusses his movie, "The Greatest Game Ever Played", but his growing up at Shady Oak CC which Ben Hogan called home. This is a terrific show about a great movie. It is well worth your time.

Shiels has picked up a new gig and a steady paycheck as the new producer of the drive time show on the Michigan Talk Radio Network. As you may recall, Shiels was the producer of the J.P. McCarthy Show on WJR for many years and also wrote the book "J.P.McCarthy: Just Don't Tell 'Em Where I Am" Shiels joins Larry Adderley and their new boss, Tim Hygh in the challenge of building this statewide collection of AM stations into a major radio force in Michigan.

PLAYABLE GOLF ROUNDS POSITIVE IN SECOND PELLUCID REPORT
The weather impact analysis report from Pellucid indicates that, on a national weighted basis, Golf Playable Rounds (GPH) was positive (up 0.7%) for the first eight months of 2005 versus the same period in 2004. Eight-month rounds played as reported by Golf Datatech declined 0.6%, so that industry performance did not quite match what Mother Nature provided.

GPH was off 1.8% for the first six months of 2005 (the previous Pellucid release) versus the same period in 2004. First half rounds played as reported by Golf Datatech declined 1.3%.

Results by region varied significantly, but Pellucid commented that in spite of all the variance at the regional level on both GPH and rounds played, the net effect at the national level is a relatively tight trading range of +/-2%.

For the report, Pellucid, in collaboration with weather information provider WeatherBank, divided the U.S. into 24 weather-based regions for golf.  For each U.S. facility, Pellucid is now capable of producing the Golf Playable Hours (GPH) and Capacity Rounds (CR) for every year from 1995-2004 and YTD 2005 including critical 10-year average figures for all measures.

JOE STERANKA SELECTED AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE PGA OF AMERICA

Joe Steranka, who has guided the growth and promotion of the communications, marketing and broadcasting branches of The PGA of America since 1988, has been named as only the second chief executive officer of the world's largest working sports organization.

Steranka, 47, succeeds Jim Awtrey, who is concluding his 19th year of service as the longest tenured CEO among America's leading golf associations.   A resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Steranka joined The PGA of America in 1988 as Director of Communications and Broadcasting. Since 2003, he has served as Managing Director of Communication and Broadcasting. Steranka will be introduced to delegates in his new position, Nov. 1, at The Association's 89th Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Regency in Scottsdale, Ariz.   "The PGA of America marks a new chapter in leadership with Joe Steranka stepping forward as our chief executive officer," said PGA of America President Roger Warren. "Since he joined The PGA of America, Joe has developed an exceptional track record in creating and marketing a wide variety of programs and services for PGA Members and the golf industry. He has established invaluable partnerships within the golf community and the sports business and television worlds. Most importantly, he has a dynamic vision for the future of The PGA and our leadership position in the game and business of golf."

BIRDIE DROPPINGS AT THE MAJESTIC
Bill Fountain wanted us to check out http://birdieday.com to find out the dynamics of this year's. annual Birdie Day outing (frozen turkey for golf). This year they have added a golf ball drop to raise money for Gleaners Food Bank. Essentially, you can buy a ball for $25 and have the opportunity to make a cool thou. Your ball as will the other 2,000 balls, will be dropped from a chopper hovering some 300' in the air. Fountain who has had two articles written about his marketing savvy in the Wall Street Journal, may have a third with this one. The frozen turkey for a round of golf, started a number of years ago and quickly packed The Majestic. There are now a number of courses involved, The Jackal, Dunham Hills, Mystic Creek, Timber Trace, Chemung Hills and Brae Burn.

Two-time titleists Sean (The Beast) Fister and Stacey Shinnick each won a third RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship during the 2005 finals at The Palms GC in Mesquite, Nevada on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Fister, 43, became the oldest competitor to claim the sport of long drive's most prestigious prize. The Little Rock resident, who previously won in 1995 and 2001, took home $100,000 for his open division title.

WE STAND CORRECTED ON JERRY MATTHEWS GRAVEL QUARRY COURSES
MG got a nice note from Michigan's "Top Quill" Jack Berry, correcting last week's MGN. His note indicated that Jerry Matthews first quarry course was Greystone and then came Hawks Eye and Buck's Run.

Greystone is the home of the award winning par 3 no. 2 hole. It was award winning in that it was a hole designed by a Golf Digest contest winner and selected from 500 finalist by Jerry Matthews. Greystone which calls it final three holes, "The Finest Finish in Michigan Golf" features the three holes around a large hole caused by gravel extraction.

Ron Whitten, golf architect writer of Golf Digest, indicated that he had a lot of reservations over the course when he first played it. However, the featured article he wrote ll years later gives the course a better rating and actually a rave review of the 18th hole. Whitten was a little miffed at the lack of any reference to the 2nd hole that was desigend by Joe Kropiewnicki, a Penn State student.

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Jack Berry for the correction.

19TH HOLE-GOT QUESTIONS?

Is it good if a vacuum really sucks?

Why is the third hand on the watch called the second hand?

If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know?

Why do "slow down" and "slow up" mean the same thing?

Why do "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean the same thing?

Why do "tug" boats push their barges?

Why are they called "stands" when they are made for sitting?

Doesn't "expecting the unexpected" make the unexpected expected?

Why is "phonics" not spelled the way it sounds?

If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?

How come abbreviated is such a long word?

Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Dr. Jack Minzey for passing on these questions.

IT AIN'T NOTHIN' TILL BILL KLEM CALLS IT

Quotes of Baseball Umpire Bill Klem
Congratulations to the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros. It was great seeing some other teams in the Series for a change. In honor of your efforts, we thought we would offer these quotes from the third team on the field, the umpires. Bill Klem, one of the great umpires of all time, had these things to say:

"Baseball is more than a game to me, it's a religion."

"An angry player can't argue with the back of an umpire who is walking away."

"Fix your eye on the ball from the moment the pitcher holds it in his glove. Follow it as he throws to the plate and stay with it until the play is completed. Action takes place only where the ball goes."

"The most cowardly thing in the world is blaming mistakes upon the umpires. Too many managers strut around on the field trying to manage the umpires instead of their teams."

"The best umpired game is the game in which the fans cannot recall the umpires who worked it."

"I told the umpires to walk back at least thirty-five feet from home plate. That reduced the arguments."

"Your job is to umpire for the ball and not the player."

"That guy in a twenty-five cent bleacher seat is as much entitled to know a call as the guy in the boxes. He can see my arm signal even if he can't hear my voice."

"It ain't nothin' till I call it."
