So......reader beware. Mike, who has been previously featured on Michigan Golfer Television channel as "The Haig"http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/hagen/index.html, continues to find work in Hollywood. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0564530/ This winter he will be in the new "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" movie to be released on December 21 and he just wrapped up a role in an upcoming Clint Eastwood film, with the tentative title of "The Changeling"http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117960798.html?categoryid=13&cs=1 The purpose in all of this is to make you aware of a new Internet television show starting this Wednesday. The "The IT Room" http://theitroom.com, which features Mike and is centered around the theme of office technology. The show is sponsored by Dell and like other such Internet television series shows, is experimental. Anyway, I thought I would do my part to send some viewers the show's way. Cheers. And you are now leaving the bragging zone. Art McCafferty ============================ FOR WHOM THE LABELLE TOLLS by Terry Moore ============================ Michigan’s only active PGA Tour player Doug LaBelle II of Mt. Pleasant failed to maintain his card for next year via the top 125 money list. Before the Fall Series started (after the FedEx Cup) LaBelle was in the 124th spot. Then Labelle dropped 14 spots when the Series ended and finished in the 138th position with $604,633. However, not all is lost for LaBelle whose best finish was a T-4th at the Sony Open in January worth $204,750. By finishing in the top 150, LaBelle is exempted into the final stage of PGA Tour Q School and has conditional status on the Tour next year which should earn him 12-15 starts. And depending upon LaBelle’s finish in the Q School, there’s always the possibility of the Nationwide Tour. The final stage of Q School will be held Nov. 28-Dec. 3 over 108 holes at Orange County National GC in Winter Haven, FL. ============== BOOK REVIEWS ============== “50 Years in a Bunker” by Pat Ruddy………………………Terry Moore I just finished a most delightful new book by Irish golf course designer, writer and photographer Pat Ruddy entitled “50 Years in a Bunker—The Creation of a World Top-100 Golf Links at The European Club.” If you’re looking for a refreshingly candid, almost confessional, narrative of how one of Ireland’s famed and admired links courses came to be then this is the book for you. And for those who have traveled and relished Ireland’s marvelous links courses first hand and have been forever smitten by their charm and appeal, it will surely be an extra special treat. Having known Ruddy for nearly 20 years, I well recall our first meeting. I was part of a group of American golf writers visiting Ireland and at one of the evening dinner functions, Pat, Editor of the Golfer’s Companion, was a special guest and sat at my table. Ruddy told us of how he had recently designed and built a links course south of Dublin in the Wicklow area. He related how he had rented a helicopter and scoured the eastern coastline of Ireland looking for the ideal and fitting terrain for a genuine links course. (According to Ruddy, there only 160 or so true links courses around the world and Ireland has 51 of them.) After finally finding the property, he and his family drew upon their modest finances and with a lot of “sweat equity” built the European Club. It was a fascinating story and it whetted my appetite to play the course. I can’t remember the circumstances (maybe weather or travel distance) but The European Club was not on our itinerary. This fact didn’t faze Ruddy at all. “No matter,” he said, smiling. “It will be here the next time you visit us. In fact, it’ll still be here in a hundred years.” Talk about taking the long view! Several years later, I did indeed return to Ireland and made sure The European Club was on my itinerary. Pat was kind enough to have his son Jerry pick us up at our hotel north of Dublin and drive us—through horrendous morning rush hour traffic—to his golf course. It took nearly two hours. After enduring the tense drive, I joked that if I had tried to make the drive myself local authorities would have used the “Jaws of Life” to extract my hands from the steering wheel upon arrival at the course. (Today, a new motorway around and south of Dublin affords a speedier and calmer route to the course.) Anyway, Ruddy’s The European Club, although spartan in amenities and a little rough around the edges, was a gem. That helicopter tour of the coastline was indeed a smart investment because the links terrain of the course was stunning. Unlike so many Irish and Scottish links courses, the views of the sea were well-exposed and visible throughout the round here. That landscape, the variety of golf holes and deft bunkering all contributed to a wonderful design. It still remains one of my favorite courses. With that as long-winded aside (sorry, I’m Irish too), let’s get back to the book. It’s done in a horizontal, coffee-table format and is filled with some beautiful photographs by our beloved chauffeur Jerry. (And we thought he only had a future in Formula One Racing!) With good humor and insight, Ruddy retraces the journey of the course and some hard-bitten lessons learned along the way. Given some of the travails of our Michigan golf economy with its host of broken and troubled courses, some of the passages have a haunting ring. For instance: “As others threw cheque books and spreadsheets at their properties, sometimes getting too deeply in debt, we did a great deal of spending but kept the costs within our capacity to cover the situation by doing most of the work ourselves and resolving to bring things along at our own financial pace,” writes Ruddy. “With west of Ireland caution, never forgetting the observations of childhood, we stayed safely within our depth.” Oh my, shouldn’t these words be mandatory reading for the next golf course entrepreneur? I also enjoyed reading about Ruddy’s design philosophy and credos. Influenced by Augusta National, he sees a golf course as an organic entity and must change with the times. Ruddy writes: “It has to move with the game and with the developing intelligence of those who control it. To stand still is to become outdated…..So, the resolve was to create as good a golf links as one could and then, working steadfastly year after year, continue to improve it and ensure that it evolves with the game itself.” As a result, Ruddy has continued to tweak and to alter the European Club, adding new tees and some new property to enhance the layout for championship play. (It has hosted several notable Irish championships and been graced by the play of the course’s record holder—Tiger Woods who shot 67.) Yet to Ruddy the most important consideration is the land itself that one envisions for a golf course. “Golf is best created where the land is golfing land, where there is a demand for golf, and where drainage is positive rather than negative,” writes Ruddy. “Golf is best when the ball does not plug to its axis and the golf shoe remains dry and clean.” Although the book is published with a few awkward elements—such as the formatting and page design—it has a homespun charm and quality all its own. I would guess, much as in the case of The European Club, the book was largely self-financed and thus certain “economies” of presentation prevailed. Nonetheless, it’s an attractive book and one well-written with Ruddy’s lively, keen wit and acute observations filling the pages. Reading it, I was captured by his spirit and passion for the game and how it all translated into one of the world’s outstanding golf courses. And as always, Pat Ruddy remains ever patient and humble with his prized handiwork. “While others were building businesses one was intent only on creating a place for one’s own golf where friends would be made welcome. There was no need for ornamentation and excess. The constant thought has been that there are centuries of life ahead for The European Club and it will grow and grow long after one is gone.” There you go again, Pat, taking the long view. Bless you. To order “50 Years in a Bunker,” visit http://www.theeuropeanclub.com -------------------- "Jack Nicklaus: My Story with Ken Bowden" .........................Art McCafferty Originally published in 1997, the book is currently out in paperback sporting a 2007 afterword. I really enjoyed the read, primarily in that the time period mirrored that of my own interest in golf. On occasion, I have had the opportunity to not only see Nicklaus play, but also his comments on during his time in various media areas. In addition, I covered the opening of two of his golf courses, The Bear in Traverse City and The Bull, near Kohler in Wisconsin. The thing I remember most about those golf course grand opening and press conferences, was the incredible recall and detail he was able to provide his audience when discussing his round of golf or his designs. In fact, you can see for yourself during a press conference he had during the Grand Opening of The Bull. http://youtube.com/watch?v=4IhWyADkGoU He clearly is not one of those architects that is one in name only. That same grasp of detail is prevalent throughout his book. When discussing his tournament play, he allows the reader in on what he was thinking prior to and during critical shots. Basically, it is like living the tournament all over again, minus the 15 cameras. Hisbook explores the love he has for his family and his decision to leave golf at the front door when he returned from tournaments. He also shares the gain and pain he encountered in the business world. There was a time that he barely escaped bankruptcy. The book ends with his retelling of the 1986 Masters and his miraculous play on the last day. Herbert Warren Wind described the event as "nothing less than the most important accomplishment in golf since Bobby Jones Grand Slam in 1930."For the record, Nicklaus played those last 10 holes at Augusta National in birdie-birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie-par-eagle-birdie-birdie-par. As the winter months close in and you put your clubs away, this book might be a nice way to get a quick golf fix. Now available as a Simon and Schuster paperback. ======================================== TOP 10 WINTER ISSUE NOW BEING PREPARED ======================================== The Michigan Golfer has begun to prepare its annual TOP 10 lists for our Winter New Year's issue. This issue attracts substantial online readership and we also get some nice feedback. As some of you may recall, last year, we offered a cool sawbuck for those readers who submitted and then had their list accepted and published by us. Our $10 check was used by some to plan elaborate vacations or attend their favorite restaurant, knowing that they had a ten spot resting in their pants. Others used the money for down payments on houses, cars or a new set of Callaways. Send your list to artmccaf@glsp.com by December 15. Here are some of the lists we ran last year. French Lick has been around for more than a century, as a health spa, golf resort and gaming center. High powered personalities of the 30's and 40's visited the area for gaming and golf. Resort guests included, Bing Crosby, Joe Louis, George Jessel, Lana Turner, Howard Hughes, Franklin D. Roosevelt and John Barrymore. However, once owner Tom Taggart lost the battle to keep the illegal gaming ongoing, the gaming in French Lick ceased. Tough times hit the valley, with only the success of Larry Bird, the Hick from French Lick, keeping the area in the spotlight. With recent legislation, gaming has returned to the valley and along with it lots of jobs. Dave Harner, Director of Golf for French Lick, gives us a tour of the golf properties, telling us about the early work of Tom Bendelow, Donald Ross and, of late, the new Pete Dye course. Susan and Paul Bairley contribute to the fun with their observations and videography. In this show, the European team is introduced and a portion of the opening ceremonies is shown. http://youtube.com/watch?v=KSf4ZR-VdLk ---------- The Retreat at Grand Haven Golf Course-with John Rooney and Jerry Matthews The folks at the Grand Haven Golf Club are adding some single dwelling homes to the course. The former driving range and a re-arrangement of a couple of the holes have allowed for the needed land. This W. Bruce Matthews designed course, with occasional tweaking by son, Jerry, is one of Michigan's treasures. Our hosts for the video are John Rooney and Jerry Matthews. Rooney and his family purchased Grand Haven in the late 90's and have erected a new clubhouse, put in a new irrigation system, upgraded the entire golf course and now are turning their attention to this new project. You can catch all of the excitement at http://youtube.com/watch?v=vGPTxFDXBQE Also, Dan Rooney, son of John, was the inspiration for the "Fallen Heroes Memorial" that the PGA and many golf associations participated in this September. The event raised more than a million dollars for scholarships. They will shift the date to the Memorial Day weekend this year. http://www.fallenheroesmemorial.com --------- Crystal Mountain Resort's Elite Junior Golf School-Brad Dean and Jennie McCafferty This summer we had a chance to visit with Brad Dean and members of his Crystal Mountain Resort instructional team. Dean and members of his staff have annually received national and state acclaim in lists of top instructors. Of late, his reputation has been enhanced by the establishment of an Elite Golf School. The young guns of today and the stars of tomorrow have been congregating at Crystal for the past few years.. This year, some of those students included Michigan Amateur Champion, MSU's Ryan Brehm and past Michigan Amateur Champion and now golf professional, EMU's Korey Mahoney. http://youtube.com/watch?v=cCdQ6WsjfOs ------- Eagle Eye Golf Course-Pete Dye, Chris Lutzke, Paul Albanese and Jack Berry We had the chance to chat with some great golf architects at the Grand Opening of Eagle Eye Golf Course. The video footage had been gathering some dust in our vaults, so we thought it was time to bring it online. Jack Berry had the delightful task of interviewing the renown Pete Dye, who mentored course architect Chirs Lutzke for a couple of decades. Chirs Lutzke has partnered up with Paul Albanese and the two of them are busy on a number of projects, one being the Sweetgrasses course near Escanaba. Chris Lutzke is still working some with Pete Dye and is on site at the new Dye course in French Lick. http://youtube.com/watch?v=xP8GwAh6SIM ------ Masters Memories Achievement Award Fourteen members of the media were honored at a 2007 Masters Memories Achievement Award ceremony. The Masters ticket is not only hard to come by for consumers, it also attracts such heavy interest from journalists, that media credentials are rare and tough to get as well. Our show captures the memories of golf writers who have been covering the Masters for 40 or more years. You can find the total list and write ups of the honorees on the Masters site at http://masters.org/en_US/news/articles/2007-04-04/200704041175714008859.html Our video features, John Derr, who has covered the Masters the longest, 62 years, Dan Jenkins, Dave Kindred, Hubert Mizell, Nick Seitz, Art Spander and Al Wester.
