MG ON THE ROAD
Detroit-Rogell Golf Course
The Willian Rogell GC, formerly the Redford Golf Course, was a Donald
Ross creation in 1921. The course measures just over 6000 yards and
plays to a 70 par.
Grand Rapids
It is always a pleasure visiting one of Michigan's vibrant cities.
Visitors to the upcoming MGCOA Annual Conference this month or the West
Michigan Golf Show in February http://michigangolfer.tv/2005shows/wmgs/index.html will note a new hotel going up next to the Amway and a new GRAM (Grand Rapids Museum) as well. In addition to all of that, on the other side of the Grand River, Grand Valley State University has created a robust campus and a real presense in the city. GVSU's main campus in out in rural Allendale, but has moved into GR big time. Finally, not far from all of this, is the new Mike DeVries designed Mines course that opened in mid August of this year. GM, Mike Loughlin, said business was good and that they are looking forward to a full season next year.
However, good as things are, the area no longer hosts the Farmers
Charity Classic. They lost their sponsor last year and no one picked the
tournament up. Perhaps GR can build on the LPGA Pro-Am held at the Elks
Highlands course each year. It would be great getting the LPGA tour
back in Michigan after Oldsmobile had to drop it a number of years ago.
Anyway, lots of great golf in the GR area.
