GAM ANNOUNCES "PLAYERS OF THE YEAR"
By Tonia Branch

Korey Mahoney (East Lansing), a sophomore on the Eastern Michigan
University golf team, topped the menâs standings for the first time
in his career. Mahoney had impressive finishes at the Michigan Amateur,
Michigan Open, and GAM Championship, but his summer was highlighted by
his performance at the U.S. Amateur, where he advanced to the second
round of match play.

Mary Jane Anderson Hiestand (Naples, FL; formerly of Clarkston), the GAM
Player of the Decade in the 1990s, was named 2003 GAM Women's Player
of the Year. Anderson Hiestand won the GAM Womens' Mid-Amateur for the
third time in her career in 2003 adding to her other illustrious Championship
trophies, GAM Women's, and the Women's State Amateur. This completes
her triple-triple in Michigan women's amateur golf.

Dan Doyle (Rochester Hills), was named 2003 Boy's Junior Player of the
Year. Doyle, a senior at Rochester Hills Stoney Creek High School, recently
finished third in the MHD Division 1 State Finals.

Krises Poland's (Livingstone's) won the 2003 Michigan Girls Junior Amateur
Stroke Play, propelling her to the top of the girl's junior standings. Polanski
currently attends Michigan State University, where she is trying to earn a
spot as a playing member on the golf team.

Greg Reynolds (Grand Blanc) earned Men's Senior Player of the Year honors
for the second consecutive year. Reynolds, the 2002 U.S. Senior Amateur
Champion, highlighted his 2003 season with a first-round score of 68 at the
Buick Open.

Jean Murray (Mount Pleasant) won 2003 Womens' Senior Player of the Year
honors. Murray's second place finish in the senior division of the Michigan
Womens' Amateur secured her place atop the GAM Womens' Senior Honor
Roll. Murray also competed in the GAM Tournament of Club Champions, GAM
Womens' Senior Amateur, and GAM Womens' Championship during the 2003
season.

TRADING TURKEYS FOR BIRDIES AND EAGLES

It is that time again, when Michigan golf courses trade golf for turkeys in an
effort to feed some needy families during the holiday season.

On Saturday, November 22 at The Golden Fox, you can bring a frozen turkey
(minimum 15 lbs) and receive free green fees and a cart for 18 holes of
golf for use on this day only. Turkeys will be given to the local Salvation
Army and United Way for distribution to the area's needy. Call
734.453.7272 for more information.

While we have not had a report from Bill Fountain, it is our
understanding that this is also an annual event.

***
FALL GOLF SHOW TURNOUT UNEXPECTEDLY LOW

Todd Smith of the Michigan Golf Show was perplexed at the low turnout at
the second Michigan Golf, Ski and Travel Show. In a letter to vendors, he
apologized for the lackluster attendance and indicated that they would
redouble their efforts to make sure that the Spring show will be as strong
as it has been in the past.

E-MAIL MARKETING WORKS--OR HURTS
By Susan Kuchinskas

E-mail marketing is a double-edged sword, according to a study released
Wednesday by e-mail marketing vendor Quris.

In its survey of 1,684 consumers, 57 percent said they had purchased
something from a business after receiving its e-mail. The bad news for
marketers is that e-mail seems to be almost equally effective in driving
customers away: Nearly half of those surveyed said they had ceased buying
from a company because of its e-mail practices.

In the study, 80 percent of respondents said they had stopped reading
e-mails from a company they'd signed up with, while 45 percent said there
was at least one company they'd stopped doing business with altogether.
The most commonly cited complaint about permission-based e-mail
marketing was that it was too frequent. Unfortunately, those "punishers"
who cut off companies they'd opted to receive communication from, were
actually better customers than those who have never stopped doing
business with a company because of its poor e-mail practices. They shop
more and spend more online, and they make more purchases as a result of
e-mail.

"Online, managing customer relationships often requires a deep understanding
of the consumer's behavioral patterns to pick up on the nuances of
whether a consumer is disengaged or dissatisfied," said John Funk, CEO
of Quris. "And, if you miss those nuances, this research shows that it can
lead to the loss of a customer, not just an unsubscribe from the offending
e-mail."
