MGN ON THE ROAD
Ann Arbor
Jerry Matthews stopped by the MGTV studio this week for an interview
with Jack Berry that will be shown at the upcoming MGCOA Conference.
Matthews designed Timberstone GC, this year's winner of the MGCOA Course
of the Year Award. Timberstone was also one of 17 courses that appeared
on Golf Digest's list of five-star courses.
Matthews indicated that it was a tremendously difficult project, in
that the terrain was extremely hilly and loaded with huge boulders both on
and in the ground. They are still there, carefully and cosmetically
arranged throughout the course. It took a year and a half of work for
the course to emerge from the land that has seen more skiers that
golfers.
Susie Fox, head professional at Timberstone, will be on hand to attend
the affair. Susie Fox, along with Tom Izzo and Steve Mariucci, put on
the UP's hottest event at Timberstone each year, the Izzo-Mariucci Golf
Classic.
While in Ann Arbor, Matthews met with James Edwards, Publisher of the
Ann Arbor Media Group. Matthews has been considering a book about the
Matthews family impact on golf course design in Michigan.

Tom Bendelow: The Forgotten Architect
http://www.michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show26/
Bart Lower, a contestant in the Big Break II television series, brings
us the story of Tom Bendelow, once known as the Dean of America's Golf
Architects. Bendelow seemed to disappear in one of his bunkers in the
mid 30's and very little is now known about him. Bart Lower
interviewed Stuart Bendelow, grandson of Tom Bendelow, at Timber Ridge Golf Club.
Stuart Bendelow became interested in his grandfather's career after
being contacted by Medinah CC, as they prepared for the 81st PGA
Championship in 1999. Bendelow was the designer of Medinah CC, which first
opened for play in 1925.

Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino and Barona Creek GC
-San Diego, California
MGN recently had the opportunity to visit the new Barona Hills Golf
Course just outside of San Diego. We spent a couple of nights in San
Diego, which is an absolutely killer place and then drove out to the Barona
Valley reservation to stay and play at the new casino and golf course.
The hotel and Casino, around a half a billion dollar project, is twice
the size of Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt, Pleasant.
The course, which opened in 2002, has received awards from Golfweek,
Golf Magazine and Travel Leisure Magazine. However, instead of talking
about it, just click on to our show http://michigangolfer.tv

BIG BREAK II UPDATE
Big Break II had some alums from Big Break I show up for a game this
week. I beat II. In addition, one of the challenges featured the
contestants hitting shots in the dark.
Mike Foster missed a putt, just as he did in the season opener, but
this time it was more costly . ³What¹s more important than anything is to
be a good person, and I appreciate everybody having that feeling (about
me),² said Foster. ³But we all came here to compete and somebody had to
lose, and we all knew that. I was just hoping it wouldn¹t be me until
the very end.²
For EMU's Bart Lower, it was another week on the show. Will he be the
one who makes the final cut? Stayed tuned, Tuesdays at 9:00 PM.

LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK
Uphill , downhill, and side-hill lies
by Marie-Claire DeBortoli,Club Med, Port St. Lucie, Florida
Uneven lies are challenging for players of all levels. For
right-handed golfers, an uphill lie is when the target foot is above the back
foot, while on a downhill slope the back foot is below the target foot.
The opposite applies to left-handed golfers.
Whatever the direction of the slope, two key principles apply to every
shot. First, you must tilt your shoulders on the same angle of the
slope. Second, a basic adjustment is to reduce the length of your swing
so you are able to maintain good tempo and rhythm and to prevent you
from losing your balance.
Uphill slope
1.Take one more club. An upslope increases loft so that you hit higher
and shorter that normal.
2. The ball will tend to hook - adjust the aim of the clubface and the
body¹s alignment.
3.Tilt your torso toward the back foot
4.Position the ball a little closer to your target heel than usual,
helping you to sweep the ball more smoothly off of the slope)
5.For added control, use a three-quarter swing.
Downhill slope
1.Take one less club. A downhill lie reduces clubface loft so that you
hit the ball lower and further than usual.
2.The ball will tend to fade - adjust the aim of the clubface and the
body¹s alignment.
3.Tilt your torso toward the target foot.
4.Position the ball slightly closer to your back heel.
5.Use a three-quarter swing and follow through down the hill.
Ball above level of feet
1.Hold the club lower- your posture is more upright than on level
ground.
2.Aim and align right to the target.
3.Put the ball in the middle of your stance.
4.Make sure you have a controlled swing with a smooth tempo on the
downswing.
5.Your swing should be slightly flatter than normal, so that your hands
stay lower at the finish.
Ball below level of feet
1.Keep your weight on your heels.
2.Aim and align left to the target.
3.Put the ball in the middle of your stance.
4.Use a controlled swing.
5. Your follow through should be more restricted than usual because
your bent posture limits your body rotation.
In all instances, be sure to take a practice swing and take note as to
where your club is striking the ground. If you can remember the basics
for playing these shots and practicing them, your chances of hitting
good shots will greatly increase.

NEW COURSE UPDATES
Designer Mike DeVries dropped us a note indicating that Greywalls,
located in Marquette, opened their front nine briefly this fall and will
open the full 18 in the spring. The warm September weather was helpful in growing in the course.
The Mines Golf Club in Grand Rapids is seeded. They cut the first tree
on May 17 and are hoping for a mid-summer opening. DeVries is very excited
about the course, which was build on the site of an old gypsum mine.
Jerry Matthews indicated that the new Sundance Golf Course at A-Ga-Ming
will open in July of 2005 For those that want a peek, you can check
out the show we did with Jerry Matthews at http://michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show24 Matthews also noted,
that the new nine at Twin Lakes Golf Club is open for play.

PLAY GOLF AMERICA MARKS SUCCESS OF INAUGURAL CAMPAIGN
More than 335,000 adults and their families participated in group
instruction programs, an estimated 1.6 million played in organized golf
outings and events and more than 5,500 PGA and LPGA member facilities
conducted programs geared to connect people to the game as part of Play Golf
America in 2004.
With the theme of "Golf Is Calling," consumers were introduced to
an $11 million advertising effort including television, radio and print
public service announcements as well as an aggressive national and
grassroots public relations campaign. Television spots aired during
major golf events such as the PGA Championship, Ryder Cup Matches, U.S.
Open as well as PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour events, with the goal of driving
people to playgolfamerica.com. A total of 2,748 television PSAs
appeared on all major television and cable networks including The Golf
Channel.
A record 4,985 PGA Professionals at 4,264 facilities nationwide gave
92,000 free 10-minute lessons.

19TH HOLE- ANDY ROONEYISMS
Andy Rooney on Fabric Softeners.
My wife uses fabric softener. I never knew what that stuff was for. Then
I noticed women coming up to me, sniffing, then saying under their
breath, "Married!" and walking away. Fabric softeners are how our wives
mark their territory. We can take off the ring. But, it's hard to get that
April Fresh scent out of your clothes.
Andy Rooney on cripes
My wife's from the midwest. Very nice people there. Very wholesome.
They use words like 'Cripes' 'For Cripes sake.' Who would that be; Jesus
Cripes? The son of 'Gosh' of the church of 'Holy Moly'? I'm not making
fun of it. You think I wanna burn in 'Heck'?
Rooney on Grandma
My grandmother has a bumper sticker on her car that says, 'Sexy Senior
Citizen.' You don't want to think of your grandmother that way, do you?
Out entering wet shawl contests. Makes you wonder where she got that
dollar she gave you for your birthday.
Thanks and a Tip of the Tam to Dr. Jack Minzey, who never met a joke he
didn't like.

Ryder Cup Memories-Art McCafferty
One would assume that all of the 10,079,985 people in Michigan have or
will be able to enjoy the memories of hosting one the world's greatest
events. For many, the playing of seven national anthems at the opening
ceremony with the coda of a fly over by the U.S. Air Force, was a real
collective throat tightener.
