MG ON THE ROAD
Ann Arbor-Ann Arbor Golf & Outing Club and Lake Forest Golf Club
Ann Arbor Golf & Outing Club
We are on the trail of 100 year old Michigan golf courses this year and
Ann Arbor Golf & Outing Club is one of our first visits. This nine
hole small private club is located on 38 acres just south of the
University of Michigan's football stadium. The actual date of the Club's
formation cannot be verified but it is generally thought to be 1890. In
addition to nine holes of golf totaling just over 2500 yards with a men's par of 33 (36 for women), the facilities include a clubhouse with dining
rooms and a tennis house with two courts. The 100 + year old courses will be featured in a Kelly Hill article in our winter issue of the Michigan Golfer.

Lake Forest Golf Club
Owner Gilda Johnson has added a new addition to their clubhouse this
year. The new dining and banquet area gives the facility the trappings to
further serve their growing list of clients.
The club has been the host of the Bank of America Futures Classic for
the past five years. Gilda indicated that the Future's future is not
clear. Tough economic conditions have contributed to the difficulty of
attracting sponsors to the event and a decision has yet to be made for
the 6th edition of the tournament.

Ypsilanti -Washtenaw Country Club
Washtenaw Country Club is another100-year-old club located in Washtenaw
CC.
In the fall of 1898, two young, well-to-do Ypsilantians Cora (Cornwell)
Henry, having just returned from a summer vacation on Martha's
Vineyard, and I. Newton Swift, a student at Yale, introduced to their friend Daniel L. Quirk, Jr. "a wonderful game" being played on the East Coast. Convincing a friendly farmer on the west edge of town to allow them to sink three decapitated tomato cans in his freshly cut hay field, the
threesome invited friends to join them for the new game of golf.
Enthusiasm for the game was infectious. On July 11, 1899, a group of 15
Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor residents met and officially formed Washtenaw
Country Club. Signers of the Articles of Association included A.A. Van
Cleve, S.E. Dodge, R.W. Hemphill, Jr., E.C. Cornwell, J.B. Colvan, H.S.
Platt, Charles D. Church, Henry W. Douglas, William Gardam, David B.
Dodge, D.L. Quirk, Jr., I. Newton Swift, W.L. Pack, Duane Spalsbury and
David R. Morford.
On July 18, 1899, the club was incorporated.
While it has been acclaimed "the second oldest golf club in Michigan,"
Washtenaw actually is the third. Detroit Country Club was started as a
nine-hole layout in about 1889, while Saginaw Country Club started its
course in early 1899, a few months ahead of Washtenaw.

GOLF ROUNDS RISE IN SEPTEMBER
Rounds played in the U.S. rose 1.0% in September 2005 vs. September
2004, according to the National Golf Foundation. Round played had also
decreased 0.3% in both August and July. The reporting is based on data
from operators at 1,903 golf facilities.
Year-to-date rounds played are 0.6% behind the 2004 pace. Discounting
the Central/South Florida (up 35.7% when compared to hurricane affected
rounds in 2004), the best performing regions in September were the
Mid-Atlantic up 8.0%), the Southeast (up 7.8%) and Northwest (up 7.3%). The
worst performing region was the Lower Midwest (down 5.7%).
The best performing region year-to-date through September was the Gulf
Coast (up 3.6%), which NGF said is sure to change given the destructive
path of Hurricane Katrina. The worst performing region year-to-date was
the Southwest (down 4.6%), which had monsoon-like rains earlier in the
year.
In September, play at premium public courses (those with peak season
weekend green fees with cart above $70) rose 0.9%. At value courses
(those with peak season weekend green fees with cart below $40), rounds
played fell 0.3%. At standard courses (($40-70), play was up 2.6%.

BOOK REVIEW: "LINES OF CHARM" BY GEOFF SHACKELFORD
The latest from Ann Arbor Media Group chronicles the great master golf
designers from the turn of the twentieth century until the Great
Depression. A number of the architects chronicled, Ross, Willie Park Jr.,
Donald Ross, C.H. Alison and H.S. Colt built courses in Michigan, The
book helped fill in a lot of holes in my own knowledge about the game and
those who created the challenges it brings. While not for everybody, it
is definitely a book for those that find golf course architecture the
fascinating subject that it is.

"GROWING THE GAME" REPORT RELEASED
Golfers enjoy hitting good shots, the challenge of the course and the
exercise they get from the game. Most golfers overestimate the distance
of their drives by 30 yards. The average male hits it 192 and the
average women 145 off the tee.
Most golfers prefer courses between 5800 and 6600 yards. These are but
a few of the findings on this massive report. All of it is online at
