MICHIGAN GOLFER COMPLETES SHIFT TO TOTAL ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING
by Art McCafferty

We have been putting the Michigan Golfer online since 1995, and in fact,
were the first golf publication in the world to do so. Last year, 2002, we
had 238,000 reader sessions, which lasted an average of just over nine
minutes. However, reader sessions, while informative, still was an apples
and oranges measurement when it came to equating the true circulation
of a publication. In the print industry, you merely have to produce print
bills to authenticate your circulation. However, with hits, bytes, reader
sessions, page views and the like, the electronic publishing industry has
been more difficult to quantify and define.

With our first issue this year, we began to put up a PDF version of The
Michigan Golfer. The early issues ran anywhere from 45-70 megabytes and
would take even a cable connection some 5-6 minutes to download. While we
started to pick up readership, people were impatient with the download
time. Since that time, we have continued to work on this challenge and since
have achieved faster downloads. As we achieved faster download times, our
online readership increased substantially. In this issue, we have made a
major breakthrough, which was made possible by the latest upgrade of
Adobe Acrobat. The size of the PDF file for this issue is under two
megabytes and takes less than 30 seconds to download. Try it yourself
http://michigangolfer.com

Also, if you are viewing The Michigan Golfer with Acrobat Reader, you will
notice that the entire publication is interactive. For example, you can click
on to hot links within the text and go immediately to a page on the web. Our
story on the Arthur Hills Michigan Golf Trail, which is really a video story
can be quickly viewed by clicking on to the video
http://michigangolfer.tv/2003showsarthurhills/index.html
, which allows you to get the story first hand.
Advertisements within the publication are also clickable, a value
added feature for clients. They are also ads that will continue to have shelf
life. We like to call these our "Forever Ads."

Our traffic increased again this year to where we are on target to finish up
the year with 271,000 reader sessions. However, for the first time, we
are able to count how many people pulled up the PDF version of the
publication. This, in effect, is an apples and apples measurement. When
The Michigan Golfer is downloaded online, it is the same as if readers had it
their hands. As we conclude our 2003 publishing year, we are on target to
have 13,000 individuals read our publication online, or roughly 11% or our
print circulation. We are confident, that our online circulation will equal our
greatest print circulation by 2005 and easily surpass it by 2006.

We have been in the Internet business for a long time now, and have launched
both the world's first online golf publication and then six years later, the
world's first golf Internet television show. http://michigangolfer.tv"
We can not claim a first with this type of publication: The New York
Times began their interactive online issue in mid 2002. There has also been
a trend to electronic publications from Travel Michigan, The Michigan PGA
and Crystal Mountain Resort.

Having said all of that, GLSP is announcing that we will totally serve our
readers, viewers and advertisers through the online issues of the Michigan
Golfer, our weekly award winning Michigan Golf News and our Michigan Golfer
Television Show. GLSP will cease printing our Michigan Golfer publication
this year. Collectively, we are projecting that we will have slightly south of
million people read or view one of golf products this year.* To accomplish
that figure, we will publish 50 issues of the Michigan Golf News, six issues
of the Michigan Golfer online and produce 39 television shows during the
2004 publishing season. We continue our journey to be a mindfill rather
than a landfill publication.

We recognize that we have a fast growing online readership and viewership
with our golf, ski and running products and that our future is tied to
creating information products for them.

SPECIAL GUEST EDITOR-JOHN BEBOW AN ADDICT SAYS GOODBYE
By John Bebow

You may recall that we featured John Bebow in a number of our newsletters
earlier this year, when he was embedded into a marine outfit in Iraq. John,
former editor of MLive, a reporter for the Detroit News and a stringer for
MG, has taken a position with the Chicago Tribune. I asked John to leave us
with something to remember him by. Time was short and so was the reply,
but it is all John Bebow.

John, we wish you well. MG

CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS
By Terry Moore-Editor Emeritus

"In the current climate of strained international relations and global unrest,
it was a relief to listen to Ryder Cup Captains Hal Sutton and Bernhard
Langer sing each others' praises as gentlemen and good sports while
reminding those in attendance at the Press Conference at Oakland Hills,
that whatever the outcome of the matches next year, it's still 'only a
game.'" This is the lead and there is Moore where that came from in Terry's
article.

LIFE ON THE TOUR
By Vanessa Bell, Futures Tour Player

Vanessa Bell, a professional golfer from England who had some success this
year in America, writes about life on the tour. Her breakthrough came this
year at the Women's Open at Crystal Mountain, where she finished 11th. It
is a terrific story and when you are done, you can take a look at this nice
young lady as she reports on both the 2003 Fifth Third Bank Women's Open
at Crystal Mountain http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show17/index.html
and the Bank of Ann Arbor Futures Golf Classic, http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show14/index.html

BETHPAGE BLACK
By Craig Brass

"My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this
guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass-out at
31 Flavors last night." From Ferris Bueller's Day Off That's the lead from
Craig Brass's marvelous article about his visit to Bethpage Black. Brass,
who never met a comp round he didn't like, managed to pay for a round at
one of nation's storied course. After reading Craig's accounting, you might
want to hustle out and buy a copy of, "Open: Inside the Ropes at Bethpage
Black", by John Feinstein. It is one of the great golf books about a golf
course. Oh yes, there is also this little treasure entitled , "How to Quit Golf."
on the book shelves as well.

PINEHURST: A GOLFER'S FANTASY
By Tim Hygh

Tim Hygh, WJR sales V.P. and occasional host of the Michigan Golfer TV
Show, made his trip to Pinehurst with R.D. Musser III, Ken Hayward and Bart
Carrigan to celebrate Hayward's 40th birthday. The trip took place the
first week of April 2003. They flew privately and dined like Kings with the
mentoring of Musser. Pinehurst treated them and all the guests they saw
nobly. Nary a complaint was heard. Nor a sad face seen. Incredible feat in
the height of peek season at America's Golf Factory.

Terry takes us to Las Vegas, which is becoming another great golf
destination.

CLOCK TOWER PRESS TO PUBLISH BIOGRAPHY OF FLAMBOYANT GOLF LEGEND
JIMMY DEMARET

Clock Tower Press announces the February 2004 publication of Jimmy
Demaret: The Swing's the Thing, a biography of one of golf's most colorful
and influential players by John Companiotte.

Named one of most important players ever in the game by both Golf
Magazine and Golf Digest, James N. "Jimmy" Demaret (1910 - 1983) was
the first golfer to win three Masters, with victories in 1940, 1947 and
1950. His total of 31 wins on the PGA Tour still ranks him among the top
15 golfers in total wins. More than simply a great golfer, he was almost
as well known for his flamboyance as for his prowess on the links.

Demaret, who once famously observed that "golf and sex are the only things
you can enjoy without being good at them," is remembered for his humor
and warmth as well as his exuberance and love of the game. Jimmy Demaret:
The Swing's the Thing fully explores the unique life and achievements of this
American original for a new generation. Author John Companiotte's articles
have appeared in magazines including Golf Magazine, Links, Golf Journal, and
Avid Golfer. He is the coauthor (with Dr. Catherine Lewis) of The PGA
Championship: The Season's Final Major, the much anticipated history of the
PGA to be published by Clock Tower Press in May 2004.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"A more colorful player or personality has never set foot on the Tour.
Jimmy's clothes were something else; pink, canary yellow and robin's egg
blue when others wore gray, navy and brown. He always said when someone
whistled at him he just whistled back with a big smile." Ben Crenshaw in the
Introduction of, "Jimmy Demaret: The Swing's the Thing".
