19TH HOLE-----THE PARROT
A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to "clean up" the bird's vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said,

"I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior."

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird continued,

"May I ask what the turkey did?"

Thanks and an extra helping of mashed potatoes and a second ration of rum, to Jack Minzey for this holiday gift.

MGN ON THE ROAD
Dexter
"I've got the best job in the world.", said Dorothy, a part time employee of Hudson Mills Metro Parks. Dorothy has been working at Hudson Mills GC for just short of two decades. Her job is to take care of the golf carts. That's it. She sends them out, keeps track of them and cleans them up when they get back. A simple non complicated job and Dorothy gets a nice check to help in her retirement years.

You may well see Dorothy out there this winter as many of the Metro Parks will be open as long as the weather is favorable. For a paltry $11 a day, $9 for seniors, you can play your heart out. http://www.metroparks.com/images/activities/winterrate.pdf Those rates are in effect from now until March 13.

Lansing
We stopped in Lansing to chat with Dave Lorenz, V.P. of Travel Michigan. We were there to get some information for the upcoming MGCOA conference and also get caught up with the challenges of the department. Travel Michigan put a nice chunk of change into marketing Michigan before and during the Ryder Cup. They rented one of the many chateaus on site at Oakland Hills CC and were able to wine and dine visiting business people, tournament goers, politicians, players and journalists. Lorenz felt that the exposure Michigan got from the Ryder Cup was enormous. Travel Michigan tracked a wide range of stories about Michigan, many found in upscale publications like the Wall Street Journal, NY Times and Forbes Magazine.

Lorenz indicated that Michigan needs to keep the momentum going, even in these uncertain economic times. He pointed to the other high profile television shows like The Big Break, The Tylenol Par 3 Shootout, The Buick Open and the Ford Senior Players Championship that continue to keep Michigan in golf's spotlight.

Lorenz indicated that the primary marketing effort of the department is to continue to drive people to the state's website http://michigan.org . They are also being proactive by launching e-specials to those that frequent the website and become part of their newsletter service.

Finally, he shared a more personal note, in that he had successfully finished the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon. One of his training partners, Dan Mulhern, Michigan's First Gentleman, also ran in the race. Both runners finished the race in a tad over four hours.

Birdies, Eagles and Elk at Thunder Bay Resort http://michigantravel.tv/2004thunderbay/index.html As fall concludes and winter approaches, those looking for an interesting trip, might want to book a weekend at Thunder Bay Resort. They will soon begin their popular Elk Tour sleigh rides. Governor Granholm stopped by Thunder Bay Resort as part of her Michigan Hidden Treasures Tour earlier this year. Our show, shows off the elk and also the legendary Jack Matthais, as he wails on his elk horn.

Tom Bendelow: The Forgotten Architect http://www.michigangolfer.tv/2004shows/show26/

Bart Lower, a contestant in the Big Break II television series, brings us the story of Tom Bendelow, once known as the Dean of America's Golf Architects. Bendelow seemed to disappear in one of his bunkers in the mid 30's and very little is now known about him. Bart Lower interviewed Stuart Bendelow, grandson of Tom Bendelow, at Timber Ridge Golf Club.

Stuart Bendelow became interested in his grandfather's career after being contacted by Medinah CC, as they prepared for the 81st PGA Championship in 1999. Bendelow was the designer of Medinah CC, which first opened for play in 1925.

THE BIG BREAK II UPDATE-LOWER STILL IN THE HUNT
Bart Lower still remains in the hunt as John Turk of Melborne, Florida was the latest to miss the cut on Big Break II. Now there are just three golfers left in the program, Lower, Kip Henley III and Don Donatello. Lower, who was a member of the Eastern Michigan University golf team, beat a lot of golf balls at Miles golf, after he heard he made the show. He was just 1 of 10 golfers chosen from 5,000 entrants. See the next show, Tuesday at 9:00 on the Golf Channel. http://thegolfchannel.com

FOREST DUNES OPENS NEW CLUBHOUSE
Forest Dunes Golf Club recently announced the opening of its new clubhouse and restaurant under the management of Intrawest Golf of Scottsdale, Arizona. The 15,000 square foot Adirondack-style clubhouse will be a wonderful complement to the already award-winning golf course.

The highlight of the new clubhouse is its upscale restaurant featuring the cuisine of Executive Chef Kurt Goddard, the popular former chef of the Fifth Street Grill in Roscommon. Goddard's food has been featured in numerous magazines, most recently in the Traverse magazine culinary section. The clubhouse will also offer grillroom selections in two more casual dining rooms. 5TH ANNUAL 20-20 CONFERENCE CONCLUDES
The fifth annual GOLF 20/20 conference concluded last week. It focused upon golf's potential for growth among women and the related importance of effective marketing strategies, the challenges of retaining current golf participants, and the importance of collaboration for the future growth of the game.

Martha Barletta, owner of The TrendSight Group and a specialist in marketing to women focused her remarks on the power of the women's market and the opportunities the golf industry has to grow by focusing on women. In marketing golf, Barletta noted, women are not looking for the same experience as men, and therefore must be approached differently.

"She really hit the nail on the head with the differences between men and women." "She helped everyone in the audience understand that they are after different experiences, and that they will be attracted to golf for different reasons."

Industry leaders were presented updates on the successes of several growth initiatives: Play Golf America, The First Tee, and The First Tee National School Program (NSP), which is introducing golf through elementary school physical education classes, and the PGA of America's Play Golf America.

PGA of America Honorary President M.G. Orender and President Roger Warren presented positive indicators of growing momentum for Play Golf America heading into 2005. This included significant marketing initiatives, 280,000 unique visitors to Play Golf America's Web site through September, nearly 3,900 facilities and more than 4,900 events posted on the site, record-setting participation during PGA Free Lesson Month, and an increase in rounds played through the first three quarters of 2004.

Introduced last year on a select basis, NSP has expanded to 24 markets in 11 states this school year. Program Director Benna Cawthorn spoke of the positive responses from teachers and students alike, and outlined the Phase I goals (2005-2010) of introducing golf and its values to 2 million students, expanding to 130 markets and establishing NSP golf in 4,000 schools' physical education curricula.

Joe Louis Barrow Jr., executive director of The First Tee, announced the annual projected economic impact of the World Golf Foundation initiative could be as high as $165 million. Taken and edited from a report by Melissa Ramsey mramsey@pgatourhq.com

LPGA TIP OF THE WEEK
by Nan Ryan, Little People's Golf Championship, Estes Park, CO

Taking aim
Do you know where you're going on a golf course? A wonderfully effective golf swing means nothing if you aren't aimed at a target.

Get in the routine of taking proper aim on every shot. Stand behind the ball and imagine a line from the ball to your target. Pick a spot on that target line about two feet in front of your ball. Now move into position and place your feet on another imaginary line parallel to the first line - the one from your ball to your target. The bottom edge of your golf club must be perpendicular to the target line, with the face of the club facing your target.

To help you visualize the proper alignment, picture the letter H. One long line is the target line; the other is the line your feet, knees, hips and shoulders are on. The cross piece shows you where the ball is in relation to your feet.

Now trust your aim! That spot you picked out about two feet in front of your ball has not moved, even though it may look different now that you are over the ball. Having confidence in this visual is extremely important. Confidence in your aim allows you to make an unthinking swing-an uninhibited, flowing motion that will result in fewer trips into the rough, and lower scores.

Trust what you see from behind the ball. You'll be surprised at how often your balls ends up on target!
