TAPS FOR THE PIANO MAN

There was a sizeable gallery on hand, at the Coats Funeral Home, to bid
farewell to Jack Saylor. Jack had accomplished much during his time here.
We learned of his days in the navy, marveled at the job he did raising his
four children as a single parent and experienced first hand his extended
family which includes; four of his own children and another six stepchildren
with his second wife Joyce. Finally, to that mix you can add an additional
mix of 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. We were also reminded
of his writing awards and his over 50 years of journalism with the Detroit
Times, Pontiac Press and Detroit Free Press.

Members of the golf community comprised a good portion of the gallery.
Those letting Jack play through, included; Jim Brandstader, football
sportscaster; Dean Howe, Booth Newspapers; Terry Moore, CEO Sportserv;
Vartan Kupelian, The Detroit News; Jack Berry, Golf Writer Emeritus; Janina
Jacobs Parrot, free lance writer; Larry Adderley, The Michigan Golf Radio
Network; Tim Hygh, WJR Radio; Barry Godwin, Shanty Creek Resort;
Rodger Jabara, Crystal Mountain; Art Tebo, Boyne USA; Lynn Henning,
Detroit News; Norm Sinclair, Detroit News; Dave Richards, Golf Marketing
Services; Ken Devine, Michigan PGA; Neal Shine, Publisher Emeritus Detroit
Free Press; Glenn Pulice, Head Professional Oakhurst and Tonia Branch of
the GAM.

A thousand Saylor stories were told on this day and many of them included
his times as the "Piano Man." Jack, was a self taught pianist who could
entertain you for hours. He would begin his set with a rendition of the
Michigan fight song and then later conclude it with the Mickey Mouse song.

Jack's service closed with Taps and the presenting of the flag to his
wife, Joyce.

There was also a luncheon held at the Pontiac Elks Club, after the
service.

"GOLF: THE MUSICAL"

Heading for New York for the holidays? If so, you may want to take in
"Golf: The Musical," now playing at the Houseman Theater Center. The play
received some favorable reviews. Neil Genzlinger, of the New York Times
wrote, " Gotta love a show that admits right up front that it's lame,
superfluous and occasionally offensive, then goes about unabashedly
proving that for the next two hours. Such is "Golf: The Musical," a hilarious
revue by Michael Roberts that turns mindlessness and predictability into
art forms."

HIGHLIGHTS OF 87TH ANNUAL PGA MEETING

"Celebrate The Spirit of The PGA" was the theme of the Annual Meeting and
it was reflected in an address by George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st
President of the United States, who was unanimously elected as a PGA
Honorary Member.

Bush, 79, whose lifelong affection for the game of golf and whose
contributions to its welfare include serving as Honorary Chairman of The
First Tee program, is the third U.S. President elected to PGA Honorary
Membership, joining Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953 and Gerald R. Ford in
1975.

A native of Andover, Mass., President Bush's family ties to golf are linked
to his grandfather, George Herbert Walker, a former U.S. Golf Association
president whose donation of a trophy in 1920 inspired the Walker Cup
Matches, a biennial amateur competition that brings together players from
Great Britain & Ireland and the United States. Bush's father, Prescott Bush,
also was USGA president, serving in 1935.

destinations we can explore during our off season."

SPECIAL GUEST EDITOR-JOHN BEBOW "AN ADDICT SAYS GOODBYE"
By John Bebow

You may recall that we featured John Bebow in a number of our newsletters
earlier this year, when he was embedded into a marine outfit in Iraq. John,
former editor of MLive, a reporter for the Detroit News and a stringer for
MG, has taken a position with the Chicago Tribune. I asked John to leave us
with something to remember him by. Time was short and so was the reply,
but it is all John Bebow. John, we wish you well. MG

CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS
By Terry Moore-Editor Emeritus

"In the current climate of strained international relations and global unrest,
it was a relief to listen to Ryder Cup Captains Hal Sutton and Bernhard
Langer sing each others' praises as gentlemen and good sports while
reminding those in attendance at the Press Conference at Oakland Hills,
that whatever the outcome of the matches next year, it's still 'only a
game.'"

This is the lead and there is Moore where that came from in Terry's article.

LIFE ON THE TOUR
By Vanessa Bell

Vanessa Bell, a professional golfer from England who had some success this
year in America, writes about life on the tour. Her breakthrough came this
year at the Women's Open at Crystal Mountain, where she finished 11th. It
is a terrific story and when you are done, you can take a look at this nice
young lady as she reports on both the 2003 Fifth Third Bank Women's Open
at Crystal Mountain

and the Bank of Ann Arbor Futures Golf Classic,

SANTEE SOUTH CAROLINA, REACHING OUT WITH SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY TO
THEIR NORTHERN GOLFERS
By Claudio Demarchi

Our next door neighbor, Claudio Dedmarchi, spends a lot of time in the
states, when he is not running his Toronto and London Golf Shows. On this
occasion he found himself in Santee, South Carolina and loving every day of
it. He lets on in on what is happening in Santee.

BETHPAGE BLACK
By Craig Brass

"My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this
guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass-out at
31 Flavors last night."

From Ferris Bueller's Day Off

That's the lead from Craig Brass's marvelous article about his visit to
Bethpage Black. Brass, who never met a comp round he didn't like, managed
to pay for a round at one of nation's storied course. After reading Craig's
accounting, you might want to hustle out and buy a copy of, "Open: Inside
the Ropes at Bethpage Black", by John Feinstein. It is one of the great golf
books about a golf course. Oh yes, there is also this little treasure entitled,
"How to Quit Golf." on the book shelves as well.

PINEHURST: A GOLFER'S FANTASY
By Tim Hygh

Tim Hygh, WJR sales V.P. and occasional host of the Michigan Golfer TV
Show, made his trip to Pinehurst with R.D. Musser III, Ken Hayward and Bart
Carrigan to celebrate Hayward's 40th birthday. The trip took place the first
week of April 2003. They flew privately and dined like Kings with the
mentoring of Musser. Pinehurst treated them and all the guests they saw
nobly. Nary a complaint was heard. Nor a sad face seen. Incredible feat in
the height of peak season at America's Golf Factory.

SLICE OF LIFE
By Terry Moore

As always, we try to finish a good read with a good read. In this issue, Terry
takes us to Las Vegas, which is becoming another great golf destination.

QUOTES OF THE WEEK-PRESIDENTS CUP

"JACK NICKLAUS: Well, I thought you saw some unbelievable golf by both
teams. Where have you had a team match where one team leads the first
day, the next team leads the second day, the other team leads a third day,
going to the last hole, the other team is leading. And then we had a tie.

And when the tie occurred, both Gary and I, as we were walking to the extra
hole, we both felt like both teams have played too well to lose this match.
We really had two winners out here. But, the captains' agreement said that
we played, and so Gary and I said, well, that's what we do. But we felt like it
was a team event, not an individual event. But that's what the rules of the
event were, so Tiger and Ernie were selected.

Then once they played one hole and they played another hole, and a fantastic
save by both of them, then the third hole, the second hole, the putt that
Tiger holed and then Ernie to hole a putt like he holed on top of it. We just
felt like there just should not in any way, shape or form not have everybody
a winner. So Gary and I stepped in and at that point, we felt it was too dark
to play anyway because they really could line up the putts at No. 2 when they
hit it. We may maybe supposedly violated the captains' agreement which
was written up for us to sign. Something that Gary and I didn't start to
start with.

I thought the matches were fantastic, I thought that the hospitality was
unbelievable, I thought the galleries were unbelievable, the display of
sportsmanship amongst the team, the camaraderie that was there and
the closeness of the things we had behind closed doors, which you guys
don't know anything about, the team meetings we had, the dinners we had.
It was just an unbelievable week. I'm just proud to have been associated with
our group of guys. Gary is proud to be associated with his group of guys.
I'm actually quite proud to be associated with both teams.

GARY PLAYER: I would like to obviously endorse everything that Jack said
there. We are both getting older in our lives, and this was just a fantastic
thing in our lives at our age, to be with such wonderful young men and see
them playing such wonderful golf and to see golf the great benefactor in
this country. This country really needed something like this very, very badly
and to have all of our ministers and presidents and dignitaries of government
and former presidents and your President Bush of America, not to mention
golf unions and PGA officials, all be in attendance here. And to witness
something that I think, I don't think it's possible to have a greater event
any time in your life.

The great benefactor was definitely charity, the game of golf, when I think
that 50 million rand will go to charity in our country through this game of
golf this week makes me feel very happy. And I'd just like to say to Jack and
his team, because I was meeting with my team on what we should be doing.
Jack made such a magnanimous, gracious - magnanimous is good , suggestion
that if we did tie, that we would hold the Cup jointly.

Now that's something that was really something very special for Jack and
his team to do because if that didn't happen, we wanted to go in the dark.
(Laughter.) And I thought that was absolutely, that was fantastic, and we
really ended in the way it should do. You'd think - we played for four days in
wind and heat, and to end up with the exact same score is a miracle."
