BRINGING UP BABY WITH KRO-FLITES
The movie, "Aviator" has renewed interest in Katherine Hepburn's
career and life. We caught her "Bringing Up Baby" film on TCM where
she costarred with Cary Grant and Nissa, the baby leopard. Some of
the film's action took place on the golf club, where Katherine, playing
Susan Vance, hit a few Spalding Kro-Flites. Katherine had a great swing
and seem to hit those Kro-Flites on a par with later LPGA pros.

LEGENDARY COACH ARTHUR LYDIARD, 1917-2004
Our sister channel, The Michigan Runner, is now featuring a video
on the late Arthur Lydiard. Enjoy.

"New Zealand's Arthur Lydiard was touring the US at the time of
his death in Texas, December 11, 2004. Thanks to Hansons Running
Shops and Playmakers, Mr. Lydiard visited Utica and Okemos, Michigan
in early November 2004. Although it's hard for American ears to
understand Mr. Lydiard sometimes, Michigan Runner TV is pleased to
bring you excerpts from his Utica presentation, November 1.
Photos by Carter Sherline / Frog Prince Studios are from the
Okemos presentation on November 2.

19TH HOLE-MERRY CHRISTMAS
Four old-timers were playing their weekly game of golf, and one
remarked how nice it would be to wake up on Christmas morning,
roll out of bed and without an argument go directly to the golf course, meet his
buddies and play a round. His buddies all chimed in and said,
"Let's do it! We'll make it a priority, figure out a way and
meet here early Christmas morning."

Months later, that special morning arrives, and there they are
on the golf course.

The first guy says, "Boy this game cost me a fortune! I bought
my wife such a diamond ring that she can't take her eyes off it."

Number 2 guy says, "I spent a ton, too. My wife is at home planning
the cruise I gave her. She was up to her eyeballs in brochures."

Number 3 guy says "Well my wife is at home admiring her new car,
reading the manual."

They all turned to the last guy in the group who is staring at
them like they have lost their minds.

"I can't believe you all went to such expense for this golf game.
I tapped my wife on the shoulder and said, "Well honey, Merry
Christmas! It's a great morning to make love or golf"........ and
she said, "Take a sweater..."

RETENTION IN GOLF BETTER THAN EXPECTED
NGF president Joe Beditz presented the results of a GOLF 20/20-
commissioned research study regarding retention in golf, at the
20/20 annual conference on November 15. The objectives of the study
were to quantify the retention rate of beginners in golf, see how
golf's retention rate compares to other sports and discover whether
golf's retention can be positively affected and, if so, by what factors.

To investigate retention, we analyzed a survey of over 100,000 individuals
collected by GOLF 20/20 in 2001 through the NFO national consumer mail panel.
From this data we were able to identify 5,286 people who said they were
introduced to golf from 1996 to 2000. These beginners were then analyzed
to see how long they continued playing.

We found that retention in golf actually fairly good. Most attrition
happens in the first year (50 percent) and continues gradually thereafter.
Golf retention rates vary predictably across demographic segments. Female
retention is lower and drops off more precipitously over time as compare to
males. (On average we keep one out of two men and one out of four women.)
Higher income people are better retained (consistent with participation rates
in golf), which has implications as the industry attempts to recruit
non-traditional segments. Age does not appear to materially affect retention.

The one-year golf retention rate of 50 percent compares favorably to tennis
(20 percent) and skiing (15 percent). It's difficult to say why, but we
hypothesize that golf is top of mind due to pervasive television coverage.
Also, with a 12-month playing season and 16,000 golf facilities, there's more
opportunity to play golf than ski. And golf doesn't require a partner of roughly
equal ability like tennis.

"FORGED COURAGE"
While attending Baker College, Kevin Boynton's composition professors
urged him to consider writing as a career. He has taken the plunge, as
his first work is the novel, "Forged Courage".

The book is about Jason Connelly, an assistant pro at Watkins Lake Golf
Club, a drop dead gorgeous girlfriend whom he'd marry someday, and a
wonderful relationship with his mom, sister, and brother. Jason's big
dream is to play on the PGA Tour. He has the game, and the mental
toughness to play at the pro level, but he has one occasional weakness,
that pops up from time to time that threatens his fragile confidence...
putting.

Kevin Boynton is an avid golfer who plays to a four handicap. Kevin
lives in Michigan with his wife, Patricia, and son, Jason.
