Grand Rapids couple enjoys learning at Crystal Mountain
By Kelly Hill

When Ron Korte retired after almost 40 years with General Motors, he wanted to improve his golf swing. One of his first efforts at that end took him and his wife, Maureen, to a two-day school at Crystal Mountain Resort. While strictly recreational players whose experience is relatively limited, the Kortes thoroughly enjoyed the program, which is under the direction of former Michigan PGA Teacher of the Year, Brad Dean.

"My wife has very limited golf experience and even though I've played more," Korte said, "when I retired I wanted to get back into the swing of things." Korte's first impression of the Crystal Mountain program came before he ever left Grand Rapids, as the resort's golf professionals mailed him and his wife a questionnaire concerning their game and their hopes for their visit to Crystal Mountain.

"My biggest problem is hitting fairway shots, I know that," Korte said, "so I told them that right away. I am not a good golfer, but I enjoy the game and I want to get better." Korte, 62, said his game did get better at Crystal Mountain, in a very personnel, relaxed setting that included only one other couple.

"They have a beautiful set-up there," Korte said. "The facility is terrific and they obviously put a lot of thought into their golf school. If people are like me, they don't take the time to understand their swing, but after going to Crystal Mountain, now I have the basics."

The instruction program at the resort began at 8:30 a.m. each day and was followed by a round of golf, though part of which the players were accompanied by their instructor. In addition to the instruction, golf and access to the practice facility, the tuition covered accommodations, breakfast each day and dinner one night.

"It was a very good value and a very good experience," Korte said. "We are probably going to want to do that again."
