Roberts rules at Super 5 Golf Week

Ada residents Mike and Linda Roberts may already have one week of summer vacation planned.

The Roberts, who are both 54 years old and are members at Blythefield Country Club in suburban Grand Rapids, may spend a week of their summer vacation exactly where they spent a week last summer_at Boyne Mountain's Super 5 Golf Week.

If you are looking for five days of professional golf instruction, rounds on perhaps the most beautiful courses you have ever seen, theatrical productions, fine dining and camaraderie with people from across the country, perhaps you too would enjoy Boyne's Super 5 Golf Week.

The Roberts purchased their Super 5 Golf Week in a charity auction and attended the golf school in late August. "We had a wonderful time and we are strongly considering going back again (this) year," Mike Roberts said. "I describe it as a camp for parents. The instructors were nice and it was very relaxing. We had all the golf we wanted to play on great golf courses and we met some interesting people."

The people Mike and Linda Roberts met at Boyne Mountain presented them with perhaps their biggest surprise of the week. "There were 70 people there and we met a few couples, but the thing that surprised us was that we only met one other couple from Michigan," said Mike Roberts, who noted that he and his wife met golfers from Atlanta, Houston, Nashville, Indianapolis and St. Louis. "It draws people from around the country."

The Roberts checked in on a Sunday afternoon and after playing a late-afternoon round on the Alpine course at Boyne Mountain, attended a cocktail party where they met the camp's pros and the other pupils. Jan Schaffer and Rob Fuhrman were the professional instructors for that particular group, but Boyne pros Brian Kowalewski and Kurt Dresbach are also Super 5 instructors. The next day, the campers underwent swing analysis and then tried to apply what they had learned when they played a round at Bay Harbor. "It was gorgeous," Roberts said. "Without a doubt, it was the most gorgeous golf course I had ever seen in my life. The vistas were like playing Pebble Beach." The first full day of Super 5 Golf Week concluded with a dinner theater production from the Young Americans.

Tuesday of Super 5 Golf Week featured a scramble, more video swing analysis and an outdoor barbecue. The middle day of the week featured a round of golf on the Heather course at Boyne Highlands and dinner at the Country Club of Boyne. Thursday of their week included nine holes on the Arthur Hills course at Boyne Highlands and nine holes on the Moor. That day concluded with an awards banquet. The Monument was the course the campers played on their final day.

"We played a lot of golf and the people were very, very nice," Roberts said. "We probably didn't take as much advantage of the lessons as we could have, but we did take advantage of the golf and the food. And the people were great."
